Painting the Air Intake/ Air Filter Housing

I have some pretty basic/newbie questions about this. Someone painted the lid, but not the rest. I want to paint it as a bit of a temp. measure (and, later, have it powder coated), but I’m tentative about a few things:

1. The rubber cover on the intake “arm” - how hard is this to remove without damaging? They look NLA. Seems like it would be too hard to tape-off.
2. The locking clips - I started fiddling with one and trying to remove it. I stopped because I wasn’t sure I could remove without damaging it. Any experience or tricks you can relay? I did just look at Maximillian and they do look available. Maybe I should talk to Paul or Saul and make sure, first.
3. Seems like the air flap in the arm can be removed. Maybe. Looking at the part diagram, it looks like it is not listed as a separate part. So, maybe it’s best to leave it, give it a bit of movement while drying to ensure it doesn’t stick (and tape a bit, where possible)?

Any tips, tricks, experience would be appreciated. As alway, thanks!

The rubber plug comes out easily but the rubber is now very hard. The temp sensor can be removed but be sure to remove the rectangular plastic piece on the underside as it will melt if powder coated. Clips can come off easily if you remove the cotter pin. If you have the wire style you can spread them without removing the cotter pins. Those temp sensors don’t work anymore, on our 2800 I just used JBWeld to fix the flap in the open position.

That sensor in the snorkel seizes, I’ve never seen a working one and they are not needed unless you live in a very cold climate.

Austin = not very cold (except when it freezes and we lose power for a week, once every 10 years).

Mine is sucking air off the exhaust manifold initially at any outside air temp I've experienced so far (but this is the PNW ;) ) . I've tested it with a hair dryer to insure it does open. There is also a noticeable difference in the "sucking sound" when it is pulling off the exhaust manifold or from the snorkel. Mine is the newer style (and probably not right for my 72MY)

What’s the difference in styles? @Dick Steinkamp ‘s looks like mine, but doesn’t have the rubber top/cap thingy on the air intake. Clamps look the same, too.

Early cars have solid band clamps, later is the wire style and early cars have the rubber plug to access the temp unit, later ones do not.

Does anyone know how this actually works? How to test to see if it works? Also and advice of how to take it off to paint?

By now most don’t work, when cold it directs air from exhaust manifold into air cleaner. It should be open to the intake from radiator panel so just make sure it is open and you will be fine.
