paper with 4 digits behind a rear seat

I know this subject pops up regularly, but has anybody found out what it actually refers to?
Yesterday I found a yellowish paper with 4 printed figures behind the rear right seat of my Golf CSL. I have had it for 7 years but it has been with a friend´s workshop for the last 6 years, so I haven´t had the seats out for whatever reason.

It is the four digit number that indicates model, 4 speed vs. automatic and region where delivery is planned.

In a US 3.0CS pre 1974 the 3435 is 4 speed, 3436 is automatic. For US 1974 models the 4 Speed is 7013 and auto is 7023. These numbers can be seen in RealOEM when searching for parts and multiple models show up.

The car is a FI CSL delivered new to Italy.
