It reminds me of the clips that hold the chrome outer window sills on. If you look at the shape, it definitely grabs some body sheetmetal, and the teeth grab onto something else. A spring loaded metal to metal or metal to plastic connection IMO.

The very nature of these scratch paint off to help these cars rust.

W & N has them same found on 2002's Guys that have old crappy molding will probably have them still there Easier to find on 2002's I would expect, more crappy moldings around

Indeed a bad concept from rust perspective point.
I've set them thick in grease before pushing them on.

Does anyone have the proper number needed for each side? I think I settled on 4 or 5 based on the marks/scratches I saw but my car only had three on each side when I began the restoration.
