Some things to think about.....

As far as I am aware all the "3 litre" engines, used the same diameter piston, basically 88.97mm and if my fading memory is correct these are the same diameter as those used in the M10 engine in the 2002 range. Stroke was the deciding factor as far as I am aware.....

"3 litre" Capacities
2966cc = 3.0 (E3/E9)
3188cc = 3.3 (E3/Bavaria)
3277cc =3.3 (E3/Bavaria)

Stoke
3.3 (3188cc) = 86.0mm
3.3 (3277cc)=88.4mm

1).. If you know the exact dimensions, including the ring thicknesses, groove numbers etc you might be able to cross reference with another manufacturer
I know somebody who found the correct pistons for a rare 6 cylinder MG were just about the same as those used in early ford V8's, all he had to do was machine the crown down a bit

2).. If you have the original pistons, you can get new rings, they come in "standard" sizes. If too big the ends can be carefully filed down

3)..If the bores are worn but pistons servicable, believe it or not it might actually be cheaper to get the block resleeved and bored back to original size, I did this with one engine a few years ago.

4).. Do you know any really good engine machine shops/ race/rally engine prep places? - Got talk to them!

5).. If really deperate mortgage your house and sell your body to science and talk to BMW :shock:

As to "Light" wings, rocking horse pooh is more common! 2nd hand or NOS is your best bet...

Thank you for your reply, the pistons are 89.25 and the stroke 84mm so different in both respects. I enjoyed your website!

I was offered some new front wings a year or so back at a price of £1600.
Probably should have taken them but the originals are not so very bad so hope/d to renovate them - but we will see. Apparantly the gauge is 21.

Regards

Richard

Remember to "sniff" around other old and new BMW engines for the correct size of piston! You might be pleasantly surprised!

As to wings - oh dear, probably repair is the way to go or "normal" ones if your not too bothered about being exact
Good luck
