Looking for a passenger door armrest (left hand drive) for a '73 3.0CS with a red interior. Was doing a photo shoot of the car and the photographer pulled a little too hard on the armrest. . . .

How much is a NOS never install set of these red armrests worth? I may know a source for one set.

FWIW, I bought a set of NOS red armrests for about $300 from an Ebay retailer that specializes in classic BMW NOS parts (RogersTii maybe ??).

Other possible sources:http://newyork.craigslist.org/wch/pts/4359767706.html I called this guy a while back and he seems legit, quite knowledgeable about early BMWs. Also, German Ebay has NOS E3/E9 red armrest from time to time.

red

In the for what it's worth department, while cleaning my red ones with citrus cleaner (per Murray F), some of the color was lost, and what shows through, is tan. My plan is to order some color-matching SEM spray vinyl...As rare as the red interiors are/were, I wonder if they were dyed anyway at the factory, as opposed to a separate color vinyl being used? Mine show some red over-spray on the back-sides that leads me to think this, and the interior has never been apart that I am aware...maybe not...
As an aside, my Nevada 2002 is going the same direction, and the spray stuff works remarkably well on the (formerly) tan arm rests, and door panels. Seating surfaces will be actual red vinyl (cardinal).
So, you might consider buying tan (more plentiful) and spray-dyeing (less $ and surprisingly good looking and durable...

Boy, that's what I would do. Even if you find NOS red ones, the plastic is still 40+ years old, which means it is brittle.

I have had non car people break that upper bracket that secures the armrest to the door, thinking that since this is an old car they must need to really slam the door. Arghhh!

plastic bracket

Duh...well of course the bracket is what broke...they were, of course injection molded in red...I was mostly speaking about the armrest itself...But...the color change on the tan plastic brackets, is the same conversation, with the red spray vinyl "dye"...World Upholstery also has the stuff in Cardinal Red, but their color consistancy isn't as good as SEM...

Dave,

It's highly unlikely that the red armrests were painted at the factory. Most likely, your coupe's armrests were painted red using the tan units as a base at some previous point.

Here are my NOS never mounted red armrests. I bought them for a future red interior conversion. Even for them being almost 40 years old NOS, the rubber is still soft and supple. From my observations, it looks like the red color is completely impregnated in the molded rubber and not surface painted.

As this close up pic shows, the back side does not show any overspray, there is a defined separation between the outer red rubber and the interior rigid foam material.

The ones I mentioned previously are identical to these and I agree with bert35csi.

red rum...er arm rests

Good to see some virgins, Bert...I have to agree with you; I took an X-acto last night and did a little carving into some back side skin to see...and it bears out what you said. Appreciate the pictures. DV
