I am wondering what the members think is the best way to mitigate very early, peripheral rust on the surface. Scrape, wire brush or sand and prime but what type of paint ? I doubt if it is possible to get touch up paint so it will have to be an approximation (Fiord Blue)

I would add rust converter to that process. There are a few online paint suppliers that will send you Fjord, just send them the color code.

For my E24 I used a steel wheel brush to clean, followed with rust converter then chipguard and then paint. Have used the on-line paint matching and it is quite good. The texture of the chipguard (which you can change/adjust) aids if the paint isn't perfect. Going on 4 years now.....

Sanding doesn't really stop the rust as it will still exist in the pits you don't reach with the sandpaper. Glass bead will get in those small areas and do a better job. Sanding over rust and painting with conventional primer has never worked for me . I have had very good results with sanding, followed by acid etching then using POR 15.

can anyone quickly tell me where to find the "color code "
thanks very much

I believe Fjord is code 37 and can be found on the Karmann plate between the hinges on the driver's door. Also there is a decal under the vin plate that says the color.

can anyone quickly tell me where to find the "color code "
