Petrolicious CSL article

real oem bmw does not help with regards to csL specific double kidney
in fact if you type the latest numbers 1826809 it reports that in fact it also brings it to csl, even prime 169 ...
all this confuses bmw csl friends
in fact that grille with that number is also for the E3 model
, but from 1974 onwards ...
I have always known that the CSL had specific double kidney.
but if you want to buy it now there are no traces of oem numbering and it takes you back to 4-line plastic strips ...
something doesn't come back to me

RealOEM is pretty bad with the date ranges. The important thing is that there is a specific part # for the CSL. The debate could live on forever. The important thing to know is that the five bar black grill will always look correct for a CSL. The four bar will always look correct for the '74/'75 CS. A lot of people swap them around and most people wouldn't be the wiser. For those that like to hyper-focus on the details, it is an important feature to update. It also one of the easiest things to address. It can be hard to find an original CSL kidney grill, but there are plenty of five bar grills to anodize black if needed.

As mentioned above, ALL Csl‘s regardless of year had one specific kidney grill and that had its unique part#. There was no option to the one grill with its specific part# even if the standard coupe grill and the later 4 slat grill fit the space created for it.
That BMW offers the later E3 grill as a replacement after they ran out of the original ones (I recall reading in a post from years ago that the original ones ran out around 1977) for all coupes is a poor substitute but should be recognized as such. What’s most definite is that no Csl (nor E9 coupe) ever came from the factory with the 4 black plastic slats. Other than someone can produce an original brochure etc.....
And here is the proof, take a look at the part# on this original grill, compare with the orange parts book which cater to the cars from the very beginning and draw your own conclusions

What I do know is that when these old grills were being assembled by hand, each worker had a stash of black anodized slats and a stash of non black ones. The ones that got the black slats got the Csl parts# and the other ones got the coupe part#. So in that sense, anodizing slats black and fitting them in the grill is exactly what BMW did too

As I recall the black five slat was last produced in 1981 based on the ETK, not RealOEM. It seems many euro CSi also had this grille but maybe ordered after delivery? Is this true?

summarize
the csL
all and without distinction
they must have double kidney with 5 black anodized ribs

alternatively those who have 4 plastic or 5 aluminum slats only
that's no good
it is assumed that they have been changed over time for reasons unknown to us
(accidents or small parking bumps).

If as you say that the 5 slat grill was produced till 1981 (makes sense) then it goes to say that there would have been no reason to install anything other than the 5 slat ones (black or silver, Csl or coupe) as production of the cars had long gone ended.

I’ve seen some that claim to have them from the beginning but not distinguishing between 3.0 CS/ CSI/ 2.5 CS. But not being witness to the original delivery, hard to say.. either way, many have the Csl grill and I’m unsure that one would have ordered a Csl grill and not a silver one as a replacement. Kind of like a coupe owner buys a Petri but very unlikely a Csl leather bound Petri which was available parallel to the standard one.
