Plan to wrap MY BABY in Golf 070 - thoughts?

Hi everyone,

It's been awhile since I posted. MY BABY is in need of some paint/body work (very minor). Instead of fixing the issues, which are minor and expected after all this time given I didn't do full bare metal restoration, I am going to do a wrap instead. I always loved the Golf 070 color, shown here, and wanted your thoughts before I pull the trigger.

I was planning on using 3M materials, and HG Bright Yellow is very similar.

Any thoughts/concerns you might have are appreciated, e.g. should I use 3M or Avery or?

I installed wrap on a couple of motorcycle panniers, it requires skill that is learned over time. Are you planning to do yourself?

Sounds fun! Those dogs of your's (assuming you still have them) won't know what car to get in! ;)
 
I would not do this myself if my life depended on it. I have a professional shop lined up. Also, some big news is pending on the car that I will share with you once completed. Stay tuned.
 
I do not know why more people do not wrap cars. It is an amazing way to customize your car My son wrapped is E36 and did it himself. Despite my skepticism it came out really nice. Professional can do amazing work

I agree. I’ve seen several really nice wrapped cars and you really can’t tell unless you look closely. I’m wondering if they might have difficulty removing some of the trim on the E9 given how delicate it is
 
removing the trim on the e9 is not for the faint of heart. the belt trim isn't hard, just time consuming. its the trim around the windows, the door locks / handles that are PITA. then you have to take off the fender / hood grilles, and you are likely going to be replacing some ... don't forget about the c pillar vent roundels. the mirrors and logo badges aren't that hard ... but the 3.0 cs badge ... hope it comes off good, they are getting harder to find / replace. the front grilles aren't tough, neither are the taillights or the center panel between them.

so here's the question, with a black car you have chrome hood / fender grilles ... usually with golf, most people prefer black. its those kind of details you really need to think about when going from a dark body to a light body.

the real PITA stuff, and the way you are going to judge the quality of their work is what they do around the door openings and what they do on the exposed inner portions of the doors and around the sill / jambs. are they going to take the glass out and get the wrap under the windshield seals?

Of course I am impartial to Golf. Wrap does come off easy, but if you don't like final result can be an expensive, "experiment." It's the putting it on part that takes the talent.

If we knew more about the news, might be easier to give advice on a "Go or No go." But I understand if you don't want to divulge.

I agree with your point about contrast. While black trim generally works better against lighter colors like Golf Yellow, I’ve decided (at least for now) to keep the original chrome trim pieces. I still have all of the black from my prior restoration, so if I want to revert back or experiment with blacked-out versions down the line, I can easily do that.

The shop doing the wrap won’t be pulling the glass or tucking under the windshield seals, but I’m making sure they go deep enough into the jams and panel gaps to maintain a clean look. I also passed your feedback along to them regarding trim disassembly and the challenges around certain parts like the 3.0CS badge and door handles—super helpful heads-up. If the "3.0 CS" badge breaks, is it truly unobtainable, or are there sources?

Appreciate the guidance, and stay tuned. I’ll share pics once it’s wrapped.

so Scott, what are you going to do with the engine compartment? leave it black? inside of hood / trunk lids - black? i forget, does your car have a black interior or a tan interior? i hope its black as i'm not so sure about tan with golf. it its black and the wrap just turns around the lip on the doors, hood, etc., then the black inner surfaces won't bother you so much. think golf door, black visible inner surfaces and tan interior ... might not look so good.

clearly there is a lot to think about, you just don't want to lessen the overall package.
 
Thanks for pointing that out—super helpful perspective. The interior is tan with brown carpets and a black dash, so it’s not a full tan-on-tan setup. I think the black dash and carpet should balance the contrast nicely, especially since I’ll be having the wrap turned well into the door and trunk lips to minimize exposed black. I’m not wrapping the engine bay or inside the trunk/hood lid, but if the visual breaks feel harsh after the fact, I can always tweak that later.
I had ChatGPT mark it up. I kind of think it works but really appreciate all your input. Anything else I should be concerned with? The fact is I ultimately want to restore the car to the original color which is sienna Brown, but realized that would be a very expensive and Time-consuming process that I will save for another day. This is a good interim step.

IMHO, the golf door, inner black paint surfaces and tan door panels is NOT going to look good. i guess its going to look better than having blue or green between ... i just don't like golf and tan (personally). i am very afraid you are going to have too much going on (visually). for your sake, i hope i'm wrong ... just don't think so. remember, the renderings aren't the real colors.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to @rsporsche for weighing in here—you’ve saved me from making a major mistake. After sitting with this a bit more, consulting my wife and a few others whose aesthetic opinions I trust, there’s now unanimous agreement: tan interior and yellow exterior just doesn’t work, at least not on this car.

I truly appreciate how constructive the advice has been—this forum really is a gem, and it’s been invaluable having the benefit of your insight.

So now I’m back to the core question:

If I am going to wrap the car, is there a color that truly works with my current interior? I’ve been considering either:
  • Siennabraun, which is the original color of the car and something I’d ideally like to return to eventually—assuming I can find a wrap that comes reasonably close, or
  • Or, possibly some of the other colors below, if you think it won't clash with the interior now.
That said, if there’s any doubt that either of those colors would still fight the interior, I may just punt altogether. The current priority is really just getting the car back in one piece. I do need to address the roof, which was damaged when the car was left outside in minus-20-degree weather and the paint cracked. I had a quick vinyl repair done, but it’s got a visible seam and really should be fixed so it looks better. I was quoted $6k to paint it, which seems to much given that a wrap is about $5k, and ultimately I will do a bare metal to the original color.

I’m not in a rush, but I’d love to hear any thoughts about whether a wrap is still worth doing.

I suspect any of the greens will work, Taiga as you indicated may be my choice because it is not common and a fun color that I’d love to have for a while, but maybe not forever.

There is maybe something to finding a very rare color like Pastel Blue.
 
Scott, there are many colors that work with tan interior ... only a few work well with black accents on the doors, etc. ... the darker the color the greater chance it works well with the black.

most shades of blue - atlantik / nacht, baikal, riviera or arktisblau ... and there have to be some cool blues in vinyl wrap.
most shades of green - i really think the dark ones similar to agave or tundra could work well ... even turkis
granatrot red works with tan + black, so does malaga
anthrazit works great with tan + black

possible colors that kinda work - chamonix, polaris, verona

the colors that don't really work
inka, colorado, fjord, sahara
 
Thank you all for your input. Really appreciate you keeping me from making a huge mistake. I’m going to measure back and see what vinyl colors are available. That are most similar to Bmw Colors that work with my interior and that my wife approves. Stay tuned.

My buddy Doug had his first M2 done with the sprayable vinyl, the color looked great but it had a lot of orange peel and it you could see many of the termination points. He had his new M2 (which he ordered the color on) sprayed too but this time it looks amazing. You would really have to know that vinyl spray had been done, by looking at it, it looks like factory paint.

Scott, if you are going to do this. Go big and go with Taiga!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone here for all the invaluable input and historical insight. After a lot of research, digging through forum archives, and running some renderings through ChatGPT, I’ve decided to wrap my car in a color very close to BMW’s original Tundra Green Metallic.

I’m using Avery SW900 Gloss Dark Green, which appears to be the closest modern vinyl match I could find to the original Tundra. It carries the same elegant, understated metallic vibe and pairs really nicely with my existing tan and brown interior (photos attached). The goal was always to stay as close as possible to a period-correct color that would hold up in the eyes of fellow enthusiasts—especially since I plan to participate in a few classic road rallies.
