Plan to wrap MY BABY in Golf 070 - thoughts?

Dollars to donuts, Scott, it's likely less expensive to repair & repaint the roof. Check out either The Werk Shop in Chicgoland or Vintage Sports & Restoration in Bedford NH, vsr1.com

It's like covering an old house with vinyl siding to hide the work it needs. If you want a quick fix, just put vinyl on the roof?

Scott,
I'd be interested it what kind of prep will be required. Glass stays in, will bumpers and all trim be coming off?.
I'm dreaming of Atlantik Blau over my marine blue interior. o_O

i'm sure you could do either ... but, the look over time will be much different. IMHO - if you don't remove the belt trim, all the grilles, door hardware, rear lights, roundels / badges its just not going to have a long-term / quality look.

your polaris to atlantik will have the opposite issue that Scott would have - instead of black around the inner surfaces of the doors, you would have silver ... that will jump out at you. just think of how that silver is going to shine through the visible openings in the front grilles.

Good point. Roof was already "repaired" poorly with vinyl, and could be improved if done properly, but there are a few other spots showing some need of repair, which would be much harder to do with vinyl, but not horrible. But all in, a change of color would be nice at this time. I know that ultimately a bare metal restore is needed, but can kick that can down for awhile.

In terms of prep: "As for the moldings and chrome. I looked over the vehicle closely and only the parts I listed in the previous email need to be removed. The gaskets around the front and rear windshields are loose enough to pull back and tuck the vinyl underneath. I'm assuming they are fairly new and the original 1974 moldings or else they would be stiff and cracking. Already per-determined where I will make my seams since every panel on this car is one continuous panel. Like newer cars the fenders, the A-pillars, rear quarters are all separate panels. It will be time consuming, but nothing we can't handle."

I will ask installer what he intends to remove and report back. Any other considerations I should check before proceeding? thanks.

what about the drip rail along the edge of the roof (above the doors / side windows)? really curious how they will do the transitions from the front fenders up the A pillars and the C pillars down to the rear fenders. there will have to be a few seams which never look that good.

i would think the bumpers have to come off for ease of wrapping the vinyl around those panels.

Will provide to the Guy and Report back

I saw a car Chrome wrapped, and it was amazing. Have always wanted to do it. It would be bold!

Hi @scottevest I just bought a coupe and I’m considering a wrap. The paint is pretty good and I’d like to preserve it from rock chips when driving on the highway. Also, my car is chamonix and while I think it’s classy, I’d prefer more color.

Anyway, I’m watching this thread closely to see your experience. I’m particularly curious what trim you or your installer removes, what you leave in place and wrap around, where the seams go, how far you wrap into the door sills, trunk lid, etc.

How is the process going? I’ll be watching for updates.

I am having second thoughts about this, as not confident that the company knows how hard it is to remove trim etc.

Aah I understand. When I’d thought about this, my plan was to remove the trim myself and trailer the car to the wrap company. But then again I haven’t looked into the process of removing it…

What were you planning to remove? Did you have an convo with the wrap company about what they would need to take off to do it well? Obviously the chrome belt line, grilles, etc. But what about the chrome window trim? Door handles and door lock? Antenna? Side marker lights? There is a lot on this car

there is a ton to remove, and the belt trim alone takes a while. the rocker covers are relatively easy. take off the mirrors (not too hard), take off the front grilles + bumpers (grilles easy, bumpers takes a little bit). take off the door handles and locks (a little complicated), antenna + side markers, taillights, fender + hood grilles (not difficult but you will generally damage the posts). take off the 4 roundels, the 3.0 cs badge (careful here to keep from breaking the posts). all of the window trim and drip rails, license plate panel, turn signals. if it was me, i would remove the windshields to get the wrap under the gaskets.

this is just what comes to mind. but this means that your door jambs / sills, engine compartment and trunk opening ... as well as what is behind the front grilles - the original color will show through. if i was going to this much trouble, i would paint it and get everything done so that it looks right ... but that might just be me. you will have something that you never have to apologize about or retell the story of why you went that way.

The most fun 7mm nuts on the belt trim are the ones under rear window and the sides in the trunk - getting around the wheel well
