1973 NA 3.0CS, April '73 build. Appears to be illuminated text, have not proven the illumination aspect. Sorry for the dirt and crust.
I thought that was frost! 
Lots of overlap at this point. we need significantly more data! 
We need coupes after May 72
Yes, illuminated, it has the recessed letters which is actually a prism
It is very cold here, but the coupe is comfortably in a 50 degree or warmer garage.I thought that was frost!

3.0csa, manufactured February 27, 1973 and 3.0cs, manufactured February 28, 1973, both were imported to NYC. Both automatic and manual have writing (English) on the dials and are illuminated.

It would make sense that they used symbols for all years on european delivery cars outside of Germany. Otherwise France would get German text or BMW made a panel for each language.
Anyone have picture of the BACKSIDE of the illuminated version???
