The original fan had a friction clutch which would disconnect the fan when it failed. Then you would have an overheated engine and maybe a cracked head if you didn’t catch it in time.

Scott,

The motor starts with a 3.5 M30 block which was bored to 92 mm, then interior components that produce a 92 mm stroke, semi-race cam, and 635 motronic fuel injection with the organ pipe manifolds and European 635 exhaust manifolds. I think I recall that the head is an '82, production year. Not much that was OE to a '74 e9!

My engine is a period correct 3l m30 (b2) block, but the head is a 3L from 1980.

I don’t see an option for unoriginal/period correct motor with newer head.

I imagine this category would fit for quite a few people assuming that the heads are indeed often replaced. Interesting topic.. though I’m not sure how valid the data will be with such a small sample size and so many variations or block/head combos out there

Hi James,

I would use the "other" option. Agreed that the "data" isn't terribly useful, but anecdotes about heads cracking (or not) aren't terribly useful either.

To be fair, I changed the name to just other and got rid of the handful of specific “other” motors.

Thanks! Regardless of how scientific the poll may be I think it is cool to see the breakdown. I’m sure once the work week starts, board activity will resume. :D

Well I have 72 Bavaria. As far as I know currently both are original. Have owned it 15 years. Automatic failed and replaced.
Currently about 110k on vehicle.

First work on Athena was replacing the cracked head with a 1986 head with drilled water jackets. Everything else is original.

You should be able to spot the head on the head without removing anything. Just to the right of the thermostat housing.

Well believe I was incorrect.

Yep, looks like a 1980 casting. I think this is exactly the benefit @Markos is trying to reap from this survey - an awareness or indication of the realized failure rate of the early heads.?.

Getting new water pump to put this on.

I replaced my cracked head back in 1988 with a newer one. Just driving back and forth to work was OK but it would start to overheat on longer drives.
