After searching for an oil leak I discovered my PS box is leaking and it is not the hose fittings or pump. This will be a royal pain to remove. There are two large seals, a cover paper gasket, maybe another. Has anyone done this with car fully assembled?

What is the source of the leak? It seems we never read of the boxes leaking...

I can’t tell but the input shaft and output shafts have seals like a wheel bearing. Top cover has a large o-ring also. Several others also somewhere.

And switch from oil to something like the Penrite “self leveling” grease. Old Alfa’s use a similar box as our BMW’s, and many experience leaking after their boxes are rebuilt. Many have switched to this stuff and seem happy with it.

Chris, about the only way to remove the steering box is to drop the subframe. I just don't see how you could get it out.
There is a engine support bar you can get that goes across the fenders (just inside the hood line) and holds the engine, then you can drop the whole subframe as a unit.
It would require a lift and some kind of jack or support because with the shocks and everything it will be heavy. Just recently did this on a 2002.

I take it out as a unit- with the center link and all.
Once on the ground use sharp blows with a hammer to disassemble. Plenty of room to get it out. Done it many times. Be nice to the splines.

Ok, guess you've done it a few times. Just gets a little crowded in there.
Don's the man.
Chris, take it to Don and let him do it.

I did the SoCal crawl 2 weeks ago- beer with Carl, wine with Peter but Chris was out and about and missed him. Heading back after after I get back to California on 16th.
maybe smart move is to send a spare box now to rehab and pull and R/R on same visit?

Blue Book says undo pitman arm to track rod, undo steering u-joint, remove hoses then three bolts and it drops down. Biggest concern is u-joint honestly as I will need leverage.

i have the tool for the ball joints but the center joints only work with a hammer.
smart move shake wheel at 3 and 9 now to look for worn parts that need replacing. U joint not bad- tap tap tap

Thanks Don, I have ball joint tool and that ugly wedge tool. Tie rods and track rod are good. I have spare control arms for when I replace the pass side strut, I think it is e12.
