Power Steering

Re: Steering adjustment

First is the adjustment of the steering box which needs a 19mm box wrench and screwdriver. Wheels straight ahead, loosen the 19mm locknut and snug up the screw. Without moving the screw any more, snug up the 19mm locknut and test drive. Once the screw is snug in the straight ahead position, do not tighten it further even if there is still looseness in the steering. This adjustment gets a one-wrench difficulty rating, and is something I automatically check upon purchase of any old bimmer.

When I read your "1 wrench" rating of steering adjustment I had to chuckle. How the hell do you get to that nut/screw assembly? In just about every e9 I've encountered, the location of the brake booster makes the adjustment seem more like an advanced dentistry project. I can get a box wrench around the nut, but I have had to resort to paperclips, and nailfiles to move the set screw. What am I doing wrong? Do you move the brakebooster out of the way to adjust?

Thanks.

Bill Arnold installed the power assisted steering rack from a VW VR6 Golf in his FrankenBav E3 that won the Targa Newfie. It was mounted on tabs welded to the back of the cross member, used e21 tie rod ends, and a "custom" assortment of u-joints to connect the steering shaft to the rack. I think it also used an e28 front subframe, but that's not so different from the e3/e9 piece.

Offset screwdrivers

I have several offset screwdrivers and the clearance is just too tight for any practical use. My first post rekindled memories of a friend who owned a bavaria. He had asked me to show him how to adjust the box. I believe I used a small point file to turn the screw then. He told me the previous owner had actually moved the brake bomb to access the nut/screw and left the box overtightened. All I can say is I am glad I don't have to repeat this often. Maybe its my big hands? As you can imagine, adjusting the Tii is a breeze, not so mit the Csi.
