I've owned my current coupe for about ten years now. It's my fifth coupe. It needed some rear window frame rust repair so I did that right away and then just started enjoying the car. I don't drive it much, maybe 1000 miles a year, but I make sure I take it out on occasion. It's Polaris, or at least that's what I thought, until just the other day I was leaning on the passenger fender looking at the engine bay and noticed the paint code sticker staring me in the face. "Bristol". What the .... !!! The car had been gone through years ago and I guess they painted it Polaris, but since it's so close to Bristol I never noticed the inner panels being different, I thought they were just non-glossy Polaris.

So. Duh. I guess my '69 2800 is suppose to be Bristol, which I don't like at all in some of the photos I've seen. The photos that show it with a hint of blue look very nice. What's the true color? On the positive side, I plan on leaving the car to my son so I guess it can be whatever color I want. :p

That's the problem I have. First, the photos I've seen are all very different so I'm not sure what's correct. I also feel that it looks WAY better on a 2002 than it does a coupe, probably because of the "sporty" feel of the coupe, not sure.

The coupe I had before this one was Baikal and tan. One of my favorite color combos. Regrets.

Are you sure the sticker is correct?

VIN and A-pillar plate should tell probably.

My first car was in a similar color...

the one on the picture is not mine.

Yellow plates are for historic cars in Poland.

Oh. I forgot to mention ... it is FSO 1500 ... Polish version of Fiat 125 but with technology from Fiat Milleseicento from 60's (XX century).

As you can see dual headlights and cut front was the beginning of the "BMW madness"

Bristol on a coupe is beautiful.
There are at least 3 ways to go:
- repaint to original Bristol color
- replace paint sticker with Polaris
- stop washing the car until it no longer shines

I like how you think.

You can find a Bristol coupe here

I sent an email to BMW Archive (I hadn't done it for this car) and it shows Polaris Metallic 060 as the original color, so you were correct to question the sticker.

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 2800 CS VIN 2201984 was manufactured on July 01st, 1969 and delivered on July 03rd, 1969 to the Netherlands. The original colour was Polaris metallic, paint code 060.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

I've asked you about it as looking on the structure of the paint around strut mount the metallic is under the sticker and the sticker looks like it was put after

Did I mention I don't like Polaris either? ;) I do, I think it looks very "German", but the fact that it's the most produced color isn't a plus in my book. The paint on my hood is checking and needs to be repainted. I'm afraid that if I start going through my coupe it will be in a million pieces in no time.

Yes it will. So what color do you see yourself happy in? Obviously not Bristol. And likely not Polaris. I think you favored Fjord or Baikal?

Yeah, those are high on the list, and several others. If I repaint the car it will stay Polaris, but I have 4+ project cars ahead of any coupe fiddling.

I have quite enough "project" with my coupe, but I still envy your project backlog. I am a glutton (or at least I dream of being so).
