putting new chrome / rubber trims on the rockers

having a little fun this afternoon - removed one of the rocker trims ... they didn't have the chrome / rubber trims on them ... so no plastic attachments. i put them in the holes, but now i'm trying to drive the pins thru. anybody have any sage advice how to do it without damaging the rocker cover. i've tried to tap them with a rubber mallet - either not hitting it hard enough or going about it the wrong way. would appreciate any advice from someone who has done this successfully.

I did this two weeks ago, I put a suitable socket under the panel where the plastic attachment goes through the panel, and then hit the pin quite hard with a regular hammer.
 
right also it might help to put a small washer under the clip to bring it out a bit as they tend to be too short to catch sometimes

Thanks Robert, this was very helpful ... it worked well. now i need to take them back out to put the washer underneath it as Alan has suggested (thanks Alan, i wish i had read this before i went out and hammered them in) i can get one side to clip, but not both. i will try again tomorrow. and if i can't get them to clip ... i will pull off the clips + put a washer under them and try again.
 
Okay, I didn't have to put any washers underneath the clips, but then again I used brand new panels. It sure was hard to get the chrome trim to clip, I used all the force (and some more) I had in my hands, one clip at a time. I noticed that you might have to adjust the chrome trim a little bit back and forth for it to be able to clip on to all the clips.
If you can't get it to clip, I've read somewhere that putting thin rubber o-rings behind the clips is better than putting metal washers.
 
i was actually going to use rubber washer, but if i can't find the right size i will go for o-rings. thanks for reminding me of the other option

good idea, if you remove one of the bolts from the end that has a little slot, then you can drop the trim over one of the clips, slide down then onto the next clip and so on ... then when you get to the end you slip the bolt back in and bolt it down at the ends.

i found some 5/16" neoprene washers at Ace - i put them on the plastic clips ... i found that if you trim two of the edges (to align with the clip) it is much easier to get it together. otherwise the neoprene will flip up and interfere with the trim.
 
update - the removing the bold from one end and sliding it on does NOT work with the white clips as the trim sits too tight to the rocker cover. i found that by placing the trim on the clips and locking the top side ... then flipping the cover over and pushing it onto the clips by putting pressure onto the inside of the rocker cover it snaps right onto the other side ... with both sides of the trim locked in place.
 
I think this is the chrome with the rubber trims being discussed...
