Specifically under the section of the seat belt warning lamp, is there a layer of metal or is it only wood & vinyl?

Feels like metal, I want to enlarge the hole that the FSB light wires go through, but not even sure a right angle drill would fit between it and the glass. Metal makes it more challenging. My AFR to FSB light housing project is proving to be more challenging than my 5 speed conversion.

Steve,

my top dash doesn't have the seat belt light, so i don't know if it is different than yours (construction wise). i think there are bits of sheet metal under the vinyl where the clips mount. whether or not it is continuous is a good question. it obviously does not run all the way down into the defroster vent holes. ... i presume that it does extend to the double sided vinyl section ... probably a strip. i also presume that the seatbelt light is not over the double sided vinyl section (closer to the defroster vents)

Dremel?

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, off to see if they make a right angle drill. It's surprisingly tight back there, even need a flex screwdriver to get the FSB base screws out.
You’ve removed the base that holds the light? It sits in a large rectangular opening. Any access behind the speaker?

Yep I've removed the base. Mine has no rectangular opening, just a small hole for the wires. The base has a rectanglular opening but it sits on the dash. Will investigate drilling from the speaker hole side - good idea.
