For my new E9, the door/ignition key only turns the trunk lock from 12:00 to 2:00 and will not lock it. The trunk opens normally. Is the same key used for door and trunk? If so, I'm guessing I should pull the lock and clean it

I looked them up. I definitely have a replacement key that is a valet key (6 dimples vs 7 for master key) . Any idea as to where I can find the key code on the car? It's not noted in any of the original documentation. Thanks

I emailed the pics thanks. Steve, where can I view the lock cylinder? Do I have to remove from car or can I access in glovebox lock. Car is at a storage facility so I can't just walk out and see... many thanka

I am not sure the glove box and ignition/car door codes are the same because of the valet key feature. Perhaps others here know. If you can get to the igntion or car door lock cylinder that would be definitive.

Sending a picture of your key to Oz won't help with the trunk issue, it will only give you two copies of the key that doesn't work in the trunk. You will need the number from the lock cylinder (ignition lock isn't too hard to get to), and that, along with the title or registration and your identification should allow a dealer to order one.

It is also 'possible' (but maybe highly unlikely) that the BMW dealer can access a master list for the key if you provide the VIN, along with your title or registration and your personal identification. Worth a try????

If you can pull the trunk cylinder, the code is stamped on the outside of the cylinder.

Hold the bus :-), as an owner of a dilapidated 72 Bavaria I have become a self proclaimed expert on breaking into these cars - If the if the key is turning to 2:00 but not 3 then the culprit may very well be the mechanism that actually catches the lock bar. Open the trunk, or boot as you may call it, and look to see what it's hitting at 2:00, it may need a persuasive adjustment- not that the suggestions above are void of merit :-)
