Question - re Turn signal / hazard lights

Hello!
I am a new 1972 left-hand-drive E9 owner and have a question regarding ann inoperative turn signal unit, which experienced owners might be able to solve.
My turn signal unit works for the washer and wiper functions but does not function on the turn signal operation. No ticking, no lights workin, nothing. The turn signal lever works cleanly and is not loose or sloppy. However, I am also completely missing the hazard unit “push button” assembly. I have ordered a new hazard unit in the hope that when I plug it in, not only will the hazard function work but that it might complete an electrical circuit and the turn signal unit might function correctly.
Does that seem a reasonable assumption or should I start hunting for a good used or NOS turn signal assembly?

Hi - the indicator circuit relies on the flasher relay:

have you checked this as well?
There are newer electrical replacement units (EL 13) or the original relay available, both havebeen discussed on this forum.

do you have a wiring diagram at hand to check the entire circuit?

I have not checked that unit - which I think is quite visible inside the small drop-down compartment where the hood lever is located?. Excuse my lack of knowledge but can a turn relay be checked if the circuit is incomplete due to a missing hazard switch? (I didn’t get a wiring diagram with the car)

You want to confirm the relay is in place for a start. If it is there, you can also check if it works by taking it out, wiring it up and checking it switches as expected.

You can change the wiring to get it to work while you await for the hazard switch...the diagram will show you how, or we can look it up.
 
That would be handy! Where would i find the diagram to isolate the hazard switch? Is there a way of bridging the female connector of the hazard switch, perhaps.?

Component 43 is your hazard switch, be careful it comes in two variants depending on the year.
If you bring pin 15 to pin 49 on the female connector you would be supplying power to the blinker solid state unit 44. It should work then for turn signal, with the stalk 50 doing the L/R switching. The wiring for 50 is not quite complete in the PDF diagrams, I once traced it in my car and drew a diagram, which I am sure I have somewhere...

I'm away for a couple of days but will give this try on the weekend. My hazard switch is on order but several weeks away, so the work around would be handy!

In 2014, Arde had suggested a modification of the turn signal / flasher circuit to make it more resilient to the frailties of these switches (*). I have a schematic for the earlier, 7-pin flashers (which is what my '70 e9 has) that shows this modification. I tried to post it here, but ran into problems. I'll reach out to you via a Conversation, and perhaps it can go via email.

My notes show that I jumpered pins 30 & 49 on the socket (pin 15 which is what Arde suggested using above, is only hot when the key is on). I just made a simple jumper with two, male connectors crimped on to a piece of wire a few inches long.

Just closing the loop here,
On advice from Arde and Jmakro, I bridged the female connectors on my empty hazard socket and voilà, flashes are working!
My hazard switch is in transit but now I’m mobile until that arrives.
Huge thanks to Arde and Jmacro for the workaround and to DFC and sfdon, who chimed in to support. This site is awesome!
 
Now you can return the new hazard switch, because nothing is more permanent than a temporary solution.
