Looks like it is a close-ratio 5 speed box. The bellhousing also appears to be from the ZF 4 speed box which early coupes came with, as it uses an external throw out arm and clutch slave cylinder. I'm having some trouble finding the part in the BMW database.

I'd be pretty suprised if it fit in a coupe, given how tall the shifter column is. It's a tight squeeze with a Getrag shifter, and that has virtually no height at all.

It fits into an E9, for sure, cause i dismantled it from an E3 !
The two types are compatible.......

Is there a number on it that starts with 23 anywhere? 23 is the prefix for manual transmissions in the BMW part numbeing system.

But there is a BMW number on it, 1253 401 104 and it was in a 3,0si..........

Thats the reason why i asked this question.....i´m curios if somebody knows more, cause i also found that Ebay-gearbox, it was also used in Opel Kadett 1000, Maserati biturbo etc.......

1253401104 isn't a BMW part number. BMW part numbers are either 11 or 7 digits. Had I to hazard a guess, I'd say it is the ZF part number.

As far as I know, the E3 never got a 5 speed box. I'd say one of the previous owners upgraded the car, much like lots of people here have done. It did use the ZF 4 speed box, which would make upgrading a lot easier.

Like I said, that isn't a standard BMW part number. BMW part numbers are either 7 or 11 digits long. That is 10. The Getrag units have the same thing. The part numbering system was in effect when the car was made.

As to why it has a BMW logo on it, it might be like the Getrag 262 and 265. Many of the 265s have the front casing saying they are 262s, because the front casing is the same. Based on this (admittedly poor) picture, it looks like the section after the bellhousing is the same between this box and the box used in the E3:

So who knows? Perhaps a PO blew his trans and had it upgraded to a 5 speed by rebuilding/expanding his original 4 speed, which would explain why it retains the BMW logo.

Does the transmission have a date on it? Usually there is a casting mark somewhere to show when it was made. This might give a clue about when / where it was used. The shifter does seem a bit tall to me too - I thought the ball joint for the shifter was normally almost exactly in the plane with the top of the transmission. Did is sit funny/tal in the E3? Interesting.

I've looked through all the likely sources from 1965-1985 and I don't see any thing like this. I've got another parts database on a computer in my home I'll check. I would suggest contacting a deal parts department to see what they can find.

ZF 5 Speed

Have seen that transmission once, as Ben Miller of CSi has/had it in his Golf Ultralite early car about 5-6 years ago.
The ZF 4 speed boxes were originally what was provided on the 2800CS. They shift well enough but have issues with the shift tower getting balky and usually get replaced with the later Getrag items. Also use smaller holes on the output flange, so the giubo and driveshaft need be different. Those bits are very difficult to source nowadays.
The link to Yannick's Alpina is pretty spectacular. Thanks for sharing--as apparently Yannick is disinclined himself to share.

I believe the CR ZF 5-speed was used in the early Gp1/Gp2 days, before the 5-speed Getrag was homologated for racing. Its a tough tough piece to find now-a-days, I have been sitting on one for years waiting for the right car to put it in.
