So, I am finally shaking down my 5 speed conversion, and lo and behold I discover a leak around the small neck where the radiator overflow hose is attached.

I have owned my car just over a year now, and she has been on jack stands a lot. Thus, I know relatively little about the condition of the radiator. Am wondering whether to just jump to a new one, thinking perhaps someone with an automatic might want mine, or alternatively, thinking about pulling the radiator and having a shop go over it.

I have very little running time since discovering this, but she does get a little hot whilst I am working on my carb setup.

What do the e9 gurus recommend?

I brought mine to a shop and had it triple cored, soldered, and pressure tested. Works great.

Take it to your local radiator shop. It might just need to be braized again if it is a small crack around the tube. Would make sense to have it all boiled out there as well. Cost me $50 (without a repair...) They use a special paint that allows for better heat transfer. (so I was told by them... they advise not to use regular rattle can paint...)

My 2 cents... DCG

Triple core and kiss hi temps good bye. Did that with Athena and she runs at 4 o'clock on the temp gauge all the time. Cost $300 or so.

I went high efficiency triple core and now there is no room for the fan and clutch. I bought a Spal pusher fan for it.

I have triple core and upgrade fan/clutch fit ok. Make sure shop stays within dimensions of original radiator (or close). Measure before taking to shop.

Chris, you could just take it to a radiator shop and have them repair and pressure test. I think you have an up-graded fan and you're running a 5 speed now so it should be OK. If she's getting hot when you're tuning the carbs and the radiator is not leaking then you may have a faulty thermostat or just a blocked up radiator. I would go cheap first, have it cleaned up and tested then see how she runs. I have an aluminum radiator I got from SFdon that I'm going to put in the blue car as soon as I get some more books out of the warehouse but I'll keep the stock one since I had it re done about 18 months ago. I'll let you know if I notice any difference with the aluminum one. Post some pictures would you! I know you have been doing lots of work to Annabelle

That's exactly it Peter. I haven't even gotten to carb tuning, just setting the timing with the new flywheel she is running hot.

As to Annabelle's appearance, here is her bare bottom (I am thinking perhaps I can shim rather than replace the bumper):

Here is the interior, with the door handles dyed so they match and the Nardi shift knob that goes with the wheel:

And, just for you, a picture of yet another TX hornets nest:

Woa! Take that rad to a shop asap! Are the fins all smashed in? Might be time for a replacement.

Just to be clear- that is the ac condenser in the pic.

Brand new factory radiator is available (nos) are 320.00 right now.

Right I missed that, time for a new parallel condensor while you're in there and remove that wasp infested one..

Yeah, and I still have the York boat anchor hanging off the side of my engine. Air conditioning was supposed to be a spring project, but Stevehose is right, now that I'm in there...

If I replace my existing radiator, what are my options for an aluminum radiator (assuming function is more importance than retaining stock appearance)?

I see where Ireland Engineering offers an aluminum radiator. Tom (Vbigdog) recommended a guy in AZ (Ron Davis), but I don't see an e9 product on his site.

I also was talking to a local e9 guy who used to be part owner of a fairly well known local independent shop (Tom Baruch of London Auto Services) and he recommended an e24 radiator, although in looking at his car I note he cut off the left side bracket in order to incorporate a bolt on bracket and made an extension for his upper hose to make it work.

Assuming I want to purchase something, what do folks recommend?

Under what circumstances would anyone want other than a NOS radiator?
If the engine has been upgraded to 3.5L m30b35?
What other things?

I can send you an almost new E24 aluminum radiator, it is a Nissen, really light when empty.
Shipping plus double digit token amount, or a first round draft pick in 2019.
Took pictures to post on Ebay but I am too lazy. Can post pictures.

I still have the stock 2 row radiator in my coupe with b35, no issues. The new ones from BMW are e24, I think Don recently posted on this. He also had Alu rads as well.
