Is this a known thing? My glass rattles by virtue of the rollers in the runners moving around so the door closes with a rattle, there rattles over bumps and with the windows down, the windows were clicking against the glass. It's bugged me for ages but I think I have cured the issue but I could not find it anywhere on here, though I did not look too closely. When attaching the bracket of the window glass to the wheels which operate in the runners this is adjustable. I figured that the rattle would disappear if the glass is tensioned away from the runner and then tightened it would force the wheel to make contact on only one side of the runner with constant pressue on the wheels. Hey presto, it works. Now, whilst this is a eureka moment for me, if it is common knowledge with all the do it yourself mechanics, then tell me and I will resume the eating of my crayons.

Ha, I have exactly the same problem which hasn’t been bothering me for ages, since the car has only been running for a few weeks in my ownership, but I was planning once I got home from our trip south to Monterey to take apart those rear windows and deal with it. I already had upgraded motors and greased tracks and like you thought that upon reassembly all would be fine; but good to know there is a fix. Any chance you took some pictures?

to me there are a couple of things that can rattle.
1. there is a rubber sandwich around the glass attachment (you can these new from @alprada70).
2. the grease dried up on the bearings in the track (back of door)
3. the lock pushrods no longer have the plastic grommet in the holes and the pushrod is rattling around the holes they go thru

......plus now the tension on the door glass against the bracket holding the wheels.

No, but this might help. The two bolts which attach the glass bracket to the runner wheels are marked in red. When tightening them press the glass away from the runner and tighten.

Good to know you solved it.

Did the glass itself feel loose, or was there something contacting the glass?

The roller block has a adjustable pin in it that sets the play to zero, that should
(In my book) remove any play from that contact point.

4 another rattling source: one of the push/pull rods should have a rubber sleeve on them, as it's are close to the glass. If it's missing, and the 2 foot long rod ever so slightly out of wack, you may have yourself a nice rattle.
5. All of the push pull rods have plastic caps on the end, pushed into the hole where they hook into. These become brittle overtime. No clip means loose, means rattle. Bmw still sells em.
6. Tools dropped into the door. Really. I found a 10mm socket bouncing around in mine.
7. the 2 tracks may not be held in place firmly themselves. Screws for rear guide on top and on top and 2/3 rd down. Front guide is the chrome vent window, screws at vent window knob height and bottom of door.

I've got a "see -through" picture of thendoor somewhere here on thensite, it is an outside view without the doorskin on. Maybe that will helpnu derstanding the parts, it's connections and layout.
