What seems to be a really nice coupe is on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250671828995&viewitem=&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching#v4-43 I say seems to be because I would like to see better photos of the tops of the strut towers and a photo from the front with the hood closed to see how the hood lines up to the header panel.

What I do see is the faint horizontal highlight lines on the sides of the car (the ones that quickie body men have trouble with) are straight & crisp. Also they took care in masking or removing hardware under the hood when they painted. Also it’s nice to see that they didn’t jack the car from the rocker panels --- I hate crushed rocker panel edges.

It might not make the matching numbers restorer (that’s really a Corvette obsession, isn’t it ?) happy but the hot motor would be icing on my cake. Unfortunately it’s exactly twice what I can afford to pay :cry::cry:. I still believe there must be a decent white sunroof coupe out there for me :). ~ John Buchtenkirch

Apparently this is in fact a really nice car and went through a total rebuild fairly recently, although this knowledge is secondhand as it comes from someone working on a build for me right now (similar project). I am pretty sure they went through the car completely do address any rust issues during the build.

The in-dash screen is not to my liking but I will freely admit that is a matter of taste, and I don't think I would mess with the cam in my S38 for reliability issues.

When I started my build this was on ebay for $100k. Since then it has been up a couple of times. Frankly given the quality of the build and the cost to replicate the job, it's probably a relatively good deal at $45k (meaning you would have to spend a lot more to get to the same place). I have no idea where they've set the reserve, but the recent $100k ask makes me think the seller is somewhat, um, optimistic.

I saw this car about a year ago when it (again) was on e-bay.

Nice car - yes
Worth what the seller thought it was - not for me.

I had an interest in this car a year ago when it was listed on Ebay. Its condition was unchanged from today. On July 14, 2009 it reached a high bid of $34,200, which is what I thought it was worth. The owner had one of his employees running the auction and answering questions for him.

Here was my correspondence of a year ago:

Him to me (while the auction was still live):

My employer mentioned to me that he wants to let the car go for somewhere in the realm of $70k. If you are still interested, I will be more than happy to compile the photos that you requested. Let me know,

Me to him (after the auction had ended)

What are your employer's current plans on selling his vehicle? With all due
respect, I believe the auction value of $34,200 that was reached on Ebay is
more representative of this car's worth in today's marketplace. $70k is the
price range for a CSL and not a CSI. Please advise.

And his reply:

As of now he is not very motivated to sell the car. He maintains his
stance on the price, and has said if the right price and home for the
car does not come around, he will enter it in the BMW car club show
taking place in Monterey sometime in August. If you have any questions,
feel free to let me know.

Nice car. I understand why it would be hard to price such a custom specimen.

Not Uncommon

I have an early 911 and this happens from time to time with the R Gruppe folks. Someone spends a great deal of time, energy and money building a hot rod and they want to get back most if not all of their investment. The only issue is that unless the builder/owner is someone very special or he manages to find a buyer with an emotional attachment to the car the strategy rarely if ever works.

I wish the best to the seller because with patience he may find his buyer as he only needs one but at 70K it is more likely that he and the car will be together for some time.

Regards,

Dave
