Does anyone know which years/trims have the fog light built into the rear panel? I’ve seen some E9s with and some without.

Was there a geographic variation (ie US vs Europe)? Year? Trim?

My’ 72 csi does not have this.

Many thanks.
Sid

to my knowledge, no US coupes came with the rear fog light ... i think this was a euro only item ... but i'm not sure which countries required them / did not.

Pretty sure uk requires it, no?
Yes but a single one has to be positioned on the RHS of the car. This is how they came from BMW in the day

sure must be the later years... i remember when we had to add a fog light ( here on the LHS ofcourse ) , but not the year... to long ago :(

I believe required from 1 March 1968 (in Belgium)

I think rear fog light was an option, or depended on target market. If you check in google pictures some 1973 or even 1974 don't have it. My German market 1972 csi have it.

Hi Sid,

I'm going to use the rear panel of my CSI as a stencil for the rear fog. Several members will have a stash of the fog light surround, and you can still find the rear fog setup on eBay. If you decide that you would like to add one, I can send you the template to borrow. One of my next assignments is to fillet the rear fog wiring from the chassis harness, so I'll have a good handle on how it is wired up. I'm adding a rear frog setup to my 2800CS.

I have the green fog light dash button but no rear fog. I wonder if the button was a default item included on every E9 but the actual fog lamp was optional? (Or only installed based on prevailing country regulations)

i know that some later BMW models used a 'fake' button for the hole that was put it. my car didn't have a green button.
the other thing to keep in mind was that 2800cs had the emergency flasher mounted to the right of the column and the rear window defog button on the left side. later models had the emergency flasher on the grab rail, the rear window defog below it and the green button to the left. not sure if the '72 3.0cs had a fake button, a green button or no hole / button.

My green button works my front fog lamps as I have no rear fog lamp. My under dash buttons are the same as yours, green, yellow & red.

From what I have gleaned it was required in some European countries and not required in others.

In the pic above, the rest knob for the kms seems to be outside rather than inside. Never seen that version before.

Early panels (for not adjustable steering column) didn't had fake buttons, instead had just "prepared holes" for possible cut if needed (in place of buttons mounts (total of 3x) - inside metal frame was factory cuted but vinyl was still closed). So if anyone (factory, dealer or other services) need to mount the button could just cut vinyl with the knife.
Fake button's where only in later panels (with adjustable steering column).

Typical for RHD version, no separate fuse cover and separate under steering column panel as was in LHD. In RHD lower steering panel is combined 2in1, so was no chance to mount km reset knob on inner side of panel as in LHD, so they just mounted it on the front wall.

My CS Italian delivery, 1974, built in 73 Has the Rear fog Light.

My '70 2800 CS, US Spec, but not Hoffmann, has no rear fog lamp, but is set up from the factory so one could be added under the bumper without much trouble. It does have the unconnected green button. There is a hole through the body work on the left side below the bumper for the fog lamp wiring. There are connectors in the loom near the left side rear light and near the relays next to the battery for the fog lamp. I don't know if there is any existing wiring from the under dash to the relay area.

Thanks for all of your input. My ‘72 csi was originally delivered in Italy but subsequently registered in Belgium. I assume a fog light was added on at that time. As you can see from the photo the fog light is not in the rear panel but rather looks like an aftermarket add on. Not loving the look and will consider updating it.
