If i remember well,
@deQuincey did an investigation on that rubber bushing orientation. I vaguely remember that it installs, counterintuitive, with the big edge on top. That would match to
@sfdon 's method.
I say 'counterintuitive', as one would quite logically argue that it makes most sense to have the thick rubber part inside the strut tower, transferring the forces of a resting car to the top of the shock.
Also my Walloth&N repro rubber split in 5 pieces from just sitting 4 years installed without driving. I've since replaced them with bmw dealer parts.
