I just did this , you will have to remove part of that lip, and cut out a bit of the area under the motor for clearance. I still had to elongate one hole to get the mesh right.
Looks like the rear E24 window motors are the same design as the E28 motors, EXCEPT the pinion gear has more teeth (14 vs 8). Does anyone know if it is possible to swap the pinion gears? Might open up a new source for retrofit motors..
I recall posting a thread that addressed the necessary modifications to the rear regulator sheetmetal, but for the life of me, I can't find it now. In summary, the rears are similar to the fronts, in that you need to re-shape the cut-out that accepts the motor for the shape and location of the e28 motor. Additionally for the rears, you will need to cut off some sheetmetal - what HB Chris refers to as the "ridge" - that is present on the rear regulator (not clear to me what it's purpose was).
