it has reinforcing in the truck with better white trim
i like the big bumpers
better door handles
better headliner - two styles combined
better wheels
one piece carpet
stock power antenna on the right rear
better seats and belts
better looking ac console
better steering wheel -adjustable
ok

Why is the one piece carpet better?

You're definitely in the minority. LIke people who don't like sex and chocolate.
 
Crash a pre-big-bumper BMW and you'll see something of what he may mean. I've done it twice, totalled both times.

I'm older and hopefully more careful now. My '72 built CS wouldn't stand a chance in either of the mistakes I got into.
 
Fwiw

A shorten 74 bumpers will do the same as a 73 bumpers in a crash. You have to drill a hole in the shock to shorten it.
 
i could see that a '74 could have better heater controls ... only because of the lights ... but the rest of the console is exactly the same. as is the other items on the list quoted by bmachine

Hey you kicked off this little debate. Don't shout fire in a crowded room. :) FWIW, there are 500,000 "euro bumper conversion" hits on Google. 5mph crash standards hit euro aesthetics pretty hard through the 70's and 80's.

To Alan's defense, if he likes those better, more power to him. They're not my cup of tea, but both bumpers are legit BMW USA so esthetics consideration are a matter of personal taste and to each his own, regardless of the number of Internet hits. It's his car and there is room for everyone's opinion.
