relay advice needed

For Christmas, I acquired a set of Hella hi-beams with 100w bulbs. I am considering including a relay into the hi-beam wiring circuit which leads to a couple of questions...

1. Do I really need a relay?... or can the existing wiring handle the load? (BTY I have a 3.5 L injected motor from a 7 series with THAT alternator..)

2. If a relay is recommended by all y'all, what should I use? ( I have an extra factory round relay like those used next to the battery (or like the A/C aux fan relay) on most of our coupes...will THAT work?)

3. Do I need to increase the guage of the wiring to the hi beam circuit if a relay is used?

Any help/suggestions will be appreciated.

Wayne,

You already have a high beam relay, it's the white wire to your high beams. Wiring is probably fine but in `74 I think coupes got a thicker wire, maybe 14 instead of 16 gauge. I question why you want a 100 watt bulb, the 55/60 H4 and 60 H1 give plenty of light and that bulb will be plenty hot. Your low beams need a relay, it's the yellow wire, that would be more practical. Using 12 or 14G wire would probably help.

Relay

Hi

Best of the season to you

Yes, A relay will help shed the load and give you a better light. Check out Daniel Stern Lighting website on lighting, he has some good explanations and help with wiring.

It will make a diference

Thanks, Rick
