Release bearing questions

I see new ones are plastic, some say to grease the input shaft tube that it rides on, others say don't if it's plastic (including BMW). What say the experts?

Also, when installing the bearing, how to prevent it from falling off the fork lever when sliding the tranny in? Looks precarious and loose just placed into the fork and therefore easily knocked off. I'd hate to install the bell housing only to have to repeat after knocking it off. :|

I had similar worries about the release bearing. In the end I installed the trans and bell housing as one unit. That way you also don't have to worry about the nut on the upper driver side, it's impossible to tighten. Many grind a bit of the rib on the case away but it's still difficult.

Tranny's are installed with the engine on an angle.
Tranny jacks have an angle adjustment.
Once you get close enough to mate the two- look in and confirm.
I've seen people install and forget the TO bearing- oh whoops
 
How bout you buy the airplane ticket and I install it for free?

Hey Don, forgetting the release bearing is just about as bad as forgetting the ring gear on a 911, any one that has done that knows that zing sound from the starter when you try and start it. You only do that once but never left out a release bearing on a BMW.

i would recommend a poboy tour ... i would start with some that have withstood the test of time - take a trip to Parasol's and Domilise's, maybe mother's ... definitely have a roast beef at all 3. then there are a myriad of other great places to try ... ask any new orleanean and you will get a different answer - most are quite good. my favorite has always been parasol's
 
Crabby Jack's has in the last few years set the standard for Po Boys imo. In addition to the traditional overstuffed shrimp, oyster, roast beef etc, they offer up roasted duck and rabbit versions. Add a cold beer and it's nirvana.

But the ones you mention are still very good. There are many great neighborhood po boy joints off the beaten path here which I have parked the coupe out front of. There's a po boy joint around the corner from my office - same food since 1940 something!

Alas, I don't have a lot to contribute to the debate over Po Boys, but if y'all get a group together to road trip to Steve's house and settle this, let me know!

Anyway, as to the throw out bearing, I installed the bell housing, using the clutch alignment tool and the clutch slave to hold the bearing in place. I then removed the alignment tool and clutch slave cylinder and installed the tranny into the bell housing.

As to the top "bitch" bolt Chris references, I bought a 17/19 S wrench specifically to do that bolt.
 
The thing about grease is that it "attracts" dust and becomes stiff and unlubricating over time, as many have discovered with window regulators or door latch mechanisms. They work best when clean and only very lightly lubricated.

If you grease the sleeve over the plastic TO bearing rides, grease+grit will eventually wear into the plastic bit, in this case your TO bearing. How long this will take I can't say.

Now if you could acquire a grease that didn't amalgamate with dust and/or grit, you'd be in business. Perhaps someone will make a suggestion, but not having heard anything yet I'm not holding my breath.
