Replacement Ignition Key

I am in need of a replacement ignition key for my project 73 csi. BMW NA cannot make the key from my VIN but instead needs the code on the ignition lock. Rather than go that route (most likely breaking the lock in the process) I was hoping to use the code on the glove box lock (the only other lock on the car when purchased recently). Will the glove box code work for the ignition key?

If not, is the only other alternative buying a new lock/key and replacing entirely?

Any advice very appreciated!

Any advice ....

I would say yes, as the glove box lock was an extra and was part of the "5 lock-one key" set BMW used to sell...a long time ago !
but you don't have your original door locks ?

Just removed my glove box lock to check the code number, it's the same as the ignition key. Both door locks have the same code too.

Trunk is a different key & code.

I would have thought trunk and glovebox would be slightly different as our coupes came with a valet key that would not open those two items, perhaps not. The ignition key would open all five though.

Thanks all for the recommendations. To close the loop, I took the glove box lock out (1 minute job) rather than try to take the ignition key out (many hours) and got the lock code. It was a 6 digit code - two letters, followed by two zeros, followed by two numbers. Gave the code to my local BMW dealer and he sent the code to BMW NA. They added another two zeros to the code - two letters, four zeros, two numbers - and had the key made. Total cost $73 (same year as my rust bucket!). Got the key today, brought it home. Worked for the glove box and worked for the ignition! Success...now pressure is on to get this thing running!

Hi, regarding getting the key code from the glove box lock. After taking the whole glove box lock apart, I failed to see a code. Could you let me know where this code might be located? Thanks
