I think we’re talking about #17 on the diagram below. I believe the variable speed circuit runs through it on the original style switch. It’s on the Real OEM parts list as well

The resistor in the box is being frozen when it gets hot.
think about it.

As a follow up I finally got around to installing a 3-speed Indak switch with the two resistors on the back - it appears to work really well, I'm not seeing any glowing or smelling anything burning, provides a nice 3-speed range so I'm not blasting myself with artic air anymore. I had to file the shaft for the switch slightly to get it to fit, but no big deal.
