Finally after almost 3 years the car is finished (mostly). There are still a few loose ends for this winter: engine tuning, seat leather, and some minor fitting issues at the doors. I have got about 500 miles on the new engine and have been working out the EFI bugs. It feels great to finally to be able to drive it with the little bit of summer we have left.

Here are some photos. Unfortunately, the file sizes are a bit limited when posting directly on the forum. I will eventually get them on my restoration website for better viewing.

Sven:

Great looking car and an inspiring level of "learn and do it".

Couple of questions - 1.) what car or part number is the wasted spark coil pack from? I'm using GM coil pack and it is HUGE - yours looks lo much more appropriate. 2.) Looks like the 28mm/23mm ST sway bar set with the rear on the middle hole - have you tried either of the other two holes yet? Impressions?

I continue to pick through the web site and may have some other questions if you don't mind.

Doug

Doug,

I have not tried the other two holes yet on the rear sway bar to see what is optimal. I am still focused on the tuning.

The part # for the coil pack is Bosch 0 221 503 002. I built a spark driver for these. However, I do not have it quite correct yet. I need to get the current level up a bit, but am limited by the input current from the MS board. I am delving way to deep into the realm of electronics (darlington pair transistors, etc.). The spark is not as strong as it could be, so I am getting the occasional misfire. You don't happen to be an electrical engineer?

did you consider the electromotive unit?

Coil Packs

The GM coil packs were what came with the SDS package and the ECU designed based on them so no didn't consider any other alternatives at that time. The size dictated the location and the urethane mounting block to deal with the funky engine bay contours. The Bosch unit would have to be tested for compatibility (SDS will do that for me) if I come up with one.

I really like the installation Sven has done and the coil pack would be further from the exhaust manifold and any potential heat soak (which hasn't been a problem). Moving to the Bosch at the old distributor location makes sense.

Don - No, I had not considered the Electromotive unit. I looks a bit larger. My ignition box also has a small board for combining the three spark signals in order to drive the tach in the dash. The coil pack location works nicely in that is in the same area as the old style distributor and the motronic one.

Doug - Your installation looks clean and works well with the air filter element (which might get in the way with my old style filter.

Sven - looks like this is the unit you used? Was it ever used in a BMW - I have to find a used (cheap) for Ross/SDS to test for charging rate as the specs included on the product sheet don't give the necessary info to check for compatibility.

The only price I could find was 172 Euro bucks !!!!!! Do you know of a more reasonable supplier?

Doug

Try for a V6 Ford ( made by Bosch)- 2001-2006 Windstar, etc. If you don't mind no name- Standard Products -Napa. $30.

FYI- Accel has a high fire.

I think both come either vertical or horizontal for the weatherpac; if that helps.

Sven- just a thought; shielding and plug gap? Bad feedback?
