Retractable front seat belts

$100.50 for the set

http://www.thepartsbin.com/guides/bmw/3.0cs/seat_belt.html.

i bought a set like this, although not this exact one, and it works great - i did have to modify the mechanism, as was meant to be mounted vertically, but this just involved removing a ball-bearing that dropped into a lock/slot when not vertical.

my car is a 74 so the mounting hole was there, but if not, would be easy to weld in a nut.

Illegal Why?

The mystery is killing me! Where did you "find" them (JC Whitney? Autozone? Bob's seatbelts and lawn mower repair???) and what is the "correct length"? I thought it was around 100" or so. Is that what yours are?

Sounds like a good, and NEW, idea for belts! I'm assuming the fittings from the 320i are still available? Why is it not legal?

It is not legal to sew or alter seatbelts unless licensed by DOT

My Friend

Would your friend be able to make another one for some $$$?
It may not be worth while for him/her but that is exactly what I would want to mount on my seat.
Looks great! Regardless, thanks for the idea.

I'll ask; though I'm not sure if he still has access to the press break.

Unless your car has been painted and not interested in installing an anchor point at the roof.

Another seat belt guide

I have upgraded my 2800cs with the same seat belts. I was told they are the only set still available from the dealer. They were not cheap. I crafted the following seat belt holder so the belt would always be in the same place in use or not. So far have worked out well...

This is quote posted in an older thread.
This guide looks great.

Ding ding ding ding! I think we have a winner!

This is what the seatbeat bolt looks like on mine. It's a '72. Has this been modified?

No, that is original. The 74 seat belts mount to threaded plates above this, don't have photo showing them, but this pic should give an indication where they should be at. The upper mounting holes on my 72 coupe don't indicate that these mounts have been added as they look original and unmolested. Believe these lower mounts were used for an earlier seat belt setup (non- retractable) of some sort.

Well, this is really weird. When I checked this link last weekend, up popped a set of 133" belts with retractors for about $100. Now I only get the lap belts for $50! Where did the others go? I can't find them either in the search of the website. Did the link change?? :-( I was all set to order them!

I am also working on upgrading my seat belts in my 71 2800cs but they have taken a “back seat” to my B35 engine with L-Jet intake swap.

My current preliminary ideas involve tucking a “webbing-sensitive locking” retractor covered with a boot with a sleeve (see attached picture) under the rear arm rest. This type of locking retractor does not have to be mounted at a specific angle since the locking mechanism relies on the rapid acceleration of the strap rather than severe deceleration of the vehicle to lock the reel. Since my arm rests do not have a built in sleeve for the belt as found on’74 and later models, the retractor boot with an integral sleeve can be trimmed to provide a tasteful and effective path for the moving belt between the arm rest and the upholstery panel. Clearance under the arm rest can be provided with minimal modification of the arm rest foundation and possibly no cutting of the arm rest upholstery leather.

A Google search of “seat belt reel boot with sleeve” provides several sources for seat belts retractors with sleeves from custom suppliers.

Any thoughts by others?

Hi to everyone.
My e9 it's a 1972 and I don't have the later upper seat belt anchor point.
Can someone have a precise sketch and photo in order to add this threat like the later design.

Thanks in advance
