Reverse light not working

is the ground connected? have you checked your reverse light switch?

Reverse light switch ... checked fine as I only measured voltage when I was shifted in reverse.

Ground ... I'll check again actually. I just realized I measured at the ground for the bulb housing and not specifically the reverse bulb ground -- More soon...

Rusty,

I had an odd issue like this about twenty-five years ago on my E9.

Firstly, is your car an automatic?

If it is it may be similar to the problem I had.... My symptoms were: 12V at reverse light globes, and a good earth at the globes.

After some fault finding I found that the only place that could be taking my current to earth (in preference to the reverse lights) was through the automatic gear indicator lights. There is also a dimming resistor between the reverse gear indicator globe and earth. The dimming resistor is activated by the headlights to dim the gear selector at night, the signal from the headlights activates the resistor.

Try disconnecting the gear indicator and/or dimming resistor as it may be a possible earth path and see what happens. You could simply pull the reverse indicator globe, also the resistor is behind the fuse box on the RHD cars.

Good luck.

Looks like I had the wrong bulbs. I needed the half-dome shaped ones. Thanks for all the input.
