RIP Bavaria windshield: We almost had it!

Huge thanks to @e9Leveque for coming out to help pick off a Bavaria parts car today. We were making awesome progress (brake booster, trim panels, seat belts, etc ) and also had the front windshield nearly the whole way out. Already feeling victorious, picturing myself wrapping it up and storing it safely away so I could hand it off to my son when he takes over wrenching on the E3, or at least until the unfortunate event of me ever needing one.

Then, right at the finish line, JC decides a flathead screwdriver is the perfect tool for a little extra leverage on the upper passenger side corner.

One sharp SNAP, CRACKLE, and POP later and my future spare windshield became instantly destined for the garbage can.

You’d think a guy who works as a spinal surgeon would have a gentler touch, but the 50-year-old glass was not up for the task of being removed today.

@e9Leveque - seriously, no harm, no foul at all, we both great laugh out of it!

If anyone happens to have a spare E3 windshield lying around, let me know...I now need one. "Local" (WA, OR, CA, Vancouver) preferred.

@sfdon you made out like a bandit today. Some nice parts coming your way soon.

ooh, yeah, there's nothing more disheartening than that crack sound - it will echo in my ears to my grave. My only retort is that at least it was a plastic pry tool, not a screwdriver, but clearly the windshield didn't care. I told Don about it and he said "yep, that's why you keep the pry tools away from the 50-year-old glass"!
I owe Kyle a windshield so let one of us know. Couple of parts that we pulled that I'll toss up here next weekend when I can get them cleaned, but already in advance if anyone wants clutch/brake pedal combo, the dash vent ducts (the "fragile ones") for an E3, door handles, a plastic coolant tank that is free with you just paying shipping (trying to keep it out of the trash heap), or headlight assemblies let me know. No more pry tools for me.
 
I’ve broken lots…. Old glass with chips are very brittle.

Neurosurgeon......then a shame, ortho surgeon......then expected. What's the old saying we have in medicine "What's the two hardest years of an orthopedists education.............third grade".

Well, although I'm a neurosurgeon I have been called an orthopedic surgeon by my ortho colleagues - they mean it as a compliment but I'm not sure the rest of the world would see it that way. Guess I proved them right yesterday.
 
In fairness, we learned from our mistakes on the front and extracted the rear glass with surgical precision
 
the old rule still stands - there are 2 basic ways to remove a vintage windshield. 1. break the glass + 2. cut the crap out of the rubber gasket in multiple places. the one thing that doesn't work, trying to save both.
