Building off of Scott's @rsporsche comment in a different thread, Road America is not far up the road from us here in Milwaukee. What a beautiful track. There are typically three vintage car racing events there each year. We get up to at least one of them each year. But we seldom see any BMWs. Many Porsches, Datsuns, Lotuses (Lotie?). Almost no BMWs. If anyone will be there with there car, let us know so we can come see you, help out, enjoy.

This year's vintage schedule includes:
Road America's SVRA Spring Vintage Festival Weekend - May 25, 26, 27
WeatherTech® International Challenge vintage cars - July 19, 20, 21, 22
Ariens Art On Wheels Weekend, VSCDA Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival - September 14, 15, 16

Hope to see you there.

I Have raced on road America many times when I used to live in Chicago. It was amazing. I would love to come up there for this. I am not looking for a real race however but just kind of a drivers education experience. Is that what it would be? If so I’m in

Scott, I don't know how this next event works. It is hosted by the SVRA (Sportscar Vintage Racing Association). If you hold a certificate from the SVRA, I suspect entry would be accepted. I believe they will accept drivers with other racing licenses as well. But I don't know the details of registration, etc. Here's an excerpt from RA's website (note the lack of mention of BMW ):

Road America's SVRA Spring Vintage Festival Weekend kicks-off the start of a summer full of racing featuring exciting wheel-to-wheel action from vintage and historical cars. Over 200 participants are expected to race in 11 separate groups, from production and grand touring cars to sports racers, prototypes, and formula cars. The weekend event will offer race groups for all SVRA classes including Formula 5000, Formula Ford, Sports Racing and production sports cars from marques such as Lotus, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Porsche and Corvette principally from the ’50s, ’60s, and ‘70s will be on track. Two Enduro races are also on the schedule. New to this event is the Mazda Miata Heritage Cup. This new race class offers a new entry point to vintage racing. The Mazda Miata Heritage Cup will run in a distinct race and race group made up of first generation 1.6-liter spec Miatas of 1990 to 1993 vintage.

Fun track, only drove on it for 3 days with the Chicago region Porsche Club. It, unfortunately for me, was an event where I never felt that I'd obtained a 'rhythm' successfully. Most tracks the rhythm usually felt pretty good after a day or two, but for some reason (obviously MY issue), it just didn't happen at RA. And, it is too far away to make repeated trips when there were so many other tracks closer. My favorites were Watkins Glen, VIR, and Mid-Ohio in that order.

It is amazing what one or two cars can do to one's perspective. I started this post noting that we seldom see BMWs racing at Road America. After our visit yesterday for the SVRA Spring Vintage Festsival, that is probably still true (from a percentages perspective, definitely true). Other marques still outnumbered the bimmers by a huge percentage. BUT, we had the pleasure of seeing a few. There was a 2002 running in the group 8 race, number 20 driven by Patrick Womack. Did not get a pic. But the big treat was an e24 driven by Andy Meudt and Bill Glavin with his 1973 batmobile in the group 12 race (also running with group 6 cars).

We met Bill and Andy - both really nice guys. The CSL was running an M30 with Kugelfischer injection and slide plate throttle. The e24 was running an S38 bored and stroked out to 4 liters. Andy said it was one of only 3 with this solid billet crank shaft. Sorry I don't have more pics of either of them - I've learned I am not a good race photographer. :D

I have a short video of the CSL on the track - but I don't know how to upload the video.?. Help:confused:

Here's a short video of Bill Glavin's 1973 3.0 CSL batmobile. This is during the qualifying round.
