while i was looking at Gary's coupe, which is a '72 ... i looked up at the underside of the roof and i noticed the mounting points for the grab handles in the back seat, but i didn't see anything else for the pivot points for the seatbelt.

so my first question is - when did the ceiling mounted pivot start? i thought it was in '72 as i know the '71 2800cs didn't have anything ceiling mounted

the second question is - what does the bracket look like and is it attached to the grab handle mount or another location? can somebody send me some detail pictures of the mount

the third question is - if the bracket mounts to the same mounts as the grab handle, does anybody have a pair of these brackets.

many thanks
scott

Hi Scott -- I don't know exactly when it started, but my car was one of the first automatic 72s produced (2250002) and it does not have them.

Even if it did have then, I don’t think those pics would show it. That part is covering about where it would be.

My CSI was built in ‘72 and has them. My ‘71 built in ‘70 doesn’t. I haven’t looked closely at the roof structure. Some guy on BAT said that they all had the bracket for it but no nut. I’m not sure if that is true.

And my ‘73 doesn’t have them. Go figure.

so anybody painting or have their headliner out of a '72 or '73 coupe want to take a picture of the roof structure where the seat belt roof mount fastens

It just occurred to me that before the resto at Coupeking a few years ago there WERE shoulder belts in my ‘73, the type that attach to the lap belt with a sort of hook and eye. But as I never used the shoulder belt I took them out.

thank you very much Mike. now that makes me wonder what the seat belt attaches to. when you look at the red early '72, it looks like what Gary's '72 looks like ... the mounting for the grab handle and the hole for the headliner bar. when i look at Mike's coupe, i see that the seatbelt mounts between the grab bar mount and the seam / bar of the headliner. so, there is either another mounting hole (extended structural mount) or there is a flat plate / bar that mounts under the grab handle and receives the seat belt mount. my guess is that its a third bolt hole.

new question, who has recently completely painted a '73 (with headliner out) or has one apart currently?

It mounts to a captured but that is welded to the roof. You can feel the nut through the headliner, which is why I know my ‘73 has it.

Mike’s post is confusing because the picture order doesn’t match the text. Unless Mike’s buddy has “ox blood” seats with a mint headliner, that is Mike’s ‘73. His friend is missing the captured but that sits on top of that hole that you see on the red roofline.
the first pic is the early '72 and the red(ish) interior is Mike's
