A question for those who have changed the braking systems on their E9 to a hydraulic boost set up. I am doing a S38 swap on my E9 and have a complete 1988 M5 donor car for parts.

I have read that the booster from the E23 7 series is shorter and maybe better than the system from the E28 5 series. I have also read the system from the M1 will work and is not too expensive.

Should I use E28 M5 system I already have or will one of the other boosters give me more room to fit the S38? Which brake booster system have you used and why?

I doubt you can find anything from a M1, only 456 where made.

I would use the E28 parts with a new brake bomb.

I used the system from the M1, which provided the right clearance. My understanding is that there are also 2002 systems that will work. Parts are available, probably because BMW still makes (or has started again to make) parts for some of the older models.

As an aside, the head of BMW classic that I ran into in Italy a few years ago told me we should be seeing a BMW website where we can order parts drop-shipped for coupes soon, and "most if not all" mechanical parts would be available. Still waiting.

The Classic site is there but the best I can tell their parts list is the same as a US BMW dealer. That might change as I have also had conversations with the guys from Classic in Germany at Ofest and a couple of US Concours.
An example of a new part would be the remanufacture of the trunk tool box.

They tell me they will be making more parts for items that are NA.
Currently waiting on a right front grill. It has been almost exactly one year since I ordered it. I have the left side. The order has not been cancelled and is not shown NA so I contacted Classic in Germany and they tell me the machine that makes grills broke down and is being repaired. At least that was the English translation of why the part was not available. That was a couple months ago.

Have you considered using the Tii booster =shorter and smaller diameter than the stock booster? Lots of us have that are using the b35 intake manifold. Guess it comes down to sufficient vacuum from one ITB port.

Plenty of stuff available from the M1.
I just bought the M1 screw on oil cannister setup....
It was fairly cheap.
