S54 drop in, good, bad and ugly

I think there's a difference in the conversation around power given what you'll be doing with it. Tracking regularly... probably need some additional chassis components to ensure nothing breaks/tears/etc. If it's more of a "cool to have and show off" or just the occasional stomp on the gas on the freeway, you'll not likely break anything immediately (or even after moderate driving). I'm guessing most of these cars don't get driven much, so unless you'll be doing burnouts and track events, minor to no structural improvements would likely be necessary.

have you looked at the rebuild prices and core price for an s38 lately?
Agreed. I am now leaning towards a well built B35 with new intake, proper head and cam. Stand alone ECU. Just easier and more in keeping with the car. I will be using it as a touring car the majority of the time anyway. Spend the extra effort making it beautiful.
That being said I am seduced by an M3 front subframe and rack and pinion. Mario at VSR will be building the car. I will rely on him for his expertise.
Thanks for everyone's input.

you are in good hands with Mario ... he builds great motors and understands handling. you should consider the RAAB classic suspension

Absolutely. Will fit them to the E9 when it's time and my 2002 next month. He says that is a serious game changer of an improvement. He was the one in favor of building a great B35 with all the cool tricks. People must like the S38 though. He has 4 of them in the engine room.

Anybody think of a 1980s 745 M106 engine for period correct and power. That engine fits in our Coupes with a minor modification and has more HP and Torque than any of the above mentioned engines. When you find an M106 they are typically cheap and can be rebuilt to a high standard with new forged rods and pistons.
