Hello all,
I have a very small one-man BMW restoration shop that I call L.C. Wylie & Co. and I also make and sell these brackets to convert your air conditioner to a modern Sanden type compressor. The original compressors are inefficient, expensive, and very hard to find a reliable new or rebuilt unit these days. Sanden compressors and replicas of them are reliable, efficient, and easy to find. My bracket attaches to the oem aluminum wing cell compressor bracket. Any M30 after about 1980 probably already has this bracket on it, but for an earlier car you would have to acquire the aluminum bracket from eBay, etc. My bracket works with both the E9 style pulley setup by running the belt in the inner groove of the compressor, and the later style (E28 etc) pulleys by running the belt in the outer groove of the compressor. I sell them for $150 plus $15.50 shipping within the 48 states, and the mounting hardware is included. Worldwide shipping is available at additional cost. To buy, you can PM or email me, or find me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/LCWylieAutomotive/

I set up a new website so it's even easier to buy! https://lcwylieco.bigcartel.com/

There's also a new M20 version of the bracket available soon.
Installed photos show an E28 M5.

Also, it's not just for E9s. 99% of M30 engines already have the wing cell bracket. Those owners can't come up with enough York brackets to do any good.

Excellent work. Thanks for clarifying the "under-bracket" issue. That was preventing me from ordering.

The wing cell bracket is part # 64-52-1-284-953. They're easy to find on ebay for $20-30. Or anyone you know that's worked on a few M30's probably has one laying around.

I have a rotary compressor on my '74 coupe. Not sure I have the correct bracket. Brackets on Ebay are for E24s etc. Would your bracket fit my coupe?

It'll fit if you have the part number bracket above. You can send me a pic of what you have and I'll identify it for you.

74 is the only year with this unique bracket and compressor, part # 64 52 1 272 240. The original compressor has a mounting ear on the very top and vert bottom.

Thanks Layne, I will yank the bracket and send you a picture. May take a few days...

Bill, your bracket likely won’t work, it needs both lower mounting points to hold it, I could be wrong. Here is the wing cell.

I recently installed this bracket as part of moving the PS belt off the WP pulley down to the crank double pulley (PN 11211258274, 124mm). As part of this the friction clutch fan has to be changed to a version of the viscous fan since the 5 blade red fan hits the double pulley as it is to close to the block/pulley. The viscous clutch places the fan closer to the radiator creating the room needed for the double groove pulley.

The klugey bracket I replaced, along with the old single groove pulley. This bracket made tensioning a PITA and has too many parts.

The bracket is very well made and the hardware included top notch as it is grade 10.9.

The only mismatch was that the upper lugs on my bracket were not snug to the bracket mounting. I didn't want to force the ears and bend them so I added some .032 shims I had laying around. Although I show it mounted to the bracket, it is far easier to first install the bracket on the block, then mount the LCW bracket to it and finally the coompressor.

Gates belt 9341 fit with room to tighten it well. The next smaller size would have also worked. For the PS belt the 10x888 fits well.

Thanks for the feedback, Luis. I think your bracket must have been previously worn down by a loose compressor. Every one I've seen has fit tightly. But there were millions made, so who knows. I think your washers are a good fix though and you shouldn't have any problems.

which model ac compressor would you recommend for an upgrade? sanded 508? or any other for an E9?
