Do they go on the tunnel side or the door side of the seat?

I’m pretty sure they go on the tunnel side actually. They the debate and photo posting begin!
1974 CSL Brochure. Note that this is a driver’s seat option. If it went on the outside, one would expect to see it in either of these two photos:

Ron’s 4355. These are 1975+ seats however since Scheel and Mann merged in ‘75.
This is a 2275 car which AFAIK, wouldn’t have the 101 option, and certainly not this late model 101 with fabric sides. Either way, no knob.

Also, it would be highly inconvenient to adjust between the the tunnel and the seat. The same as for standard seats, adjustments are always on the door side, IMHO
It’s safe to say that every road going CSL has had the seats removed at least once. I’m not sure I agree about adjustment. I’ve had my share of VW’s with adjustment knobs on the inside of the Recaros. One of the strategies employed with high bolster seats (like my old recaro trophy’s) is to swap the driver and passenger seat. That way you don’t wear out the outer bolster due to ingress/egress.
Not sure if this could count as a real car, but here is a pic from the BMW Classic Archives. Probably the same car from the brochure given the Bat splits and what looks like a motorsport stripe.
Side note: What model is reflecting in the rear window? Not an e3, e12, or e23. Clearly a sedan with e3/e23/e28 vents. Concept? Notice that it has no trailing window rail, like our e9 rears that go down on an angle.
I don’t think it is likely that I will find pics of the tunnel area. Bolsters are too high and it isn’t a common focal point of pics.

Looks line prototype for E28 or E23. Final shapes are different but there is specific to e28 rear finish of the ventilation in the C-pillar.
E12 was different - plastic trim.
Door handles looks like E12 ones.
Love the description of the Scheel cloth... "The hard wearing black cloth"... I suppose hard wearing means it looks good for about a month before it bags out.. Lol
All LHD CSLs starting with 2275349 had the driver´s four position adjustable seat with stretch cloth inserts and adjustment wheel on the right side (tunnel). Source BMW ETK and personal observation. This evolution was a quick response to the German TüV requirement for a driver´s adjustable backrest in the CSL.
Both slide knobs are on Right side of Scheels.

Good info to throw into this thread. Unlike the seats however, you don’t really have an option to mix up the arrangement.
I wouldn’t bay an eye at the scheel knobs on the outside of a CSL. If I was a CSL owner I would rotate my seats on the tire schedule.
@Gerrit confirmed a few things. I recently saw a 2275 car on facebook with 101’s
with the cloth triangle. I thought it may be an owner upgrade. Looks like they are likely original.
I know of at least 4 types of Scheel 101’s. I’ll rattle off my observations but encourage any amendments. I believe these are in sequential order
- Early 101 with no triangle in the pivot and a lever for tilt adjust
- 101 with no triangle in the pivot, adjustment knob on seat back (this is what I have with extensive help from @Keshav)
- 101 with vinyl triangle in the pivot, adjustment knob on seat back
- 101 with cloth triangle in the pivot, adjustment knob on seat back
- 101 with cloth triangle in the pivot, adjustment knob on seat back, badged as Scheel-Mann (1975 merger)
If you add in “ASS” seats there are more combination. Location of the knob along with the foam (smooth versus paneled) etc.

Can I ask how these 101's work to get access to rear seats? Couldn't find any pics. Thanks.
They don’t actually, they only tilt adjust ever-so-slightly. Rear seat access is granted by the tilt frame. The whole seat pivots forward.

BTW, both my 101’s are the same. I’m going to attempt to swap sides on one of my seats. I need to have a vinyl repair guy patch up a 1” tear, so I figured he could patch up the knob hole on one side. Will be several years before I revisit this.
