I'll be needing new(er) mufflers at some point. Out of state seller has full slightly used system; willing to get it to me quite reasonably. Will cut pipes to separate components. So question: what's good practice here? What can can be separated to facilitate shipping? Are there specific instructions?

It might matter more how you would go about putting the pieces back together. If you have a competent welder to do the job, I would consider specifying the cuts be made at the welder's convenience, so he will be able to best do his job on your end.

V-Band Clamps
Cut the pipe about 2" out from the muffler (s) on either end and use V band clamps to put it back together. Come in stainless steel. Makes it very quick and easy to remove/install the entire system in sections whenever you want to work on the tranny or diff.
