so i have a question on the old style shift lever. haven't tried to separate the ball section from the upper part (with the screw knob). i will confess i haven't tried. one of the questions is whether the upper piece can be swapped between the push-on style and the screw on style ... how hard is it? are they interchangeable?

i will tell you the reason i am asking - there is a shift knob that i really like, but it is a push-on. i have a 320i lever, but there is a 528i lever in the car.

The upper piece is held on by a large circlip inside the base, the whole unit needs to come out to remove it but then you can put in a new rubber bushing.

thanks Chris ... that's good to know. i will order up some new bushings etc. while i am there.

There are 2 rubber bushings inside, a lower and an end cap, and you may need to put one end in a vice and yank hard on the other to separate them, after removing the circlip of course.
