Nice video but I think our 3.0CSLs were the first M cars... although prepared by tuners at first.
The M1 is nice, but it (to me) never represented a "BMW design" and there has been nothing like it since. OTOH there were several other cars of the day, and previously, which used the same or similar lines. It was also probably a massive commercial failure, as it never arrived in time to compete in the series for which it was intended.
507? nice, but hardly unusual. Look at all the euro two-seaters of the time and before. Jag XK? MG? They all shared the design language of the time.
But I don't speak his design language. Hofmeister and Goetz for me, tho'.
Surprised the 328 wasn't mentioned... I've read it cost 3x a doctor's salary in those days.
These are halo cars, before the term was common. Nice, but hardly intended for the average person. Fortunately happenings for third- and fourth-tier owners like me...

strange, no mention of the 850..... i see that one as a civilized "road" going version of the M1 ?
M1 looks best flared w/a rear wing:

Remember the first time I saw an M1. Was on a company shuttle in Manhattan in 1984, one drove by, shuttle driver rear ended the car in front of us. Beautiful car but the rims.....................well
Apologies in advance but I do not consider the M1 to be in the same. Category of the 8 series or the 507.
The M1 was a competition car that was adapted for the street to meet homologation requirements, much in the way of Ferraris from the early 1960’s. for the street. The 507 and 8 series were luxury GT street cars with zero pretensions of being suitable for racing.
other than bing BMW’s They are vastly different in design intent and purpose.
I think all three are amazing cars, from a styling standpoint.
