I've removed all the asphalt/sound-insulation from my interior. In the interior area under the rear seats, above the rear pushrod rubber mounting, I found half cup of sand when the asphalt peeled off. (BTW this material only contacts the metal like 60% of the area it is applied and this was a air pocket ares)
Where did this sand enter the interior? How should this be sealed up? In the picture I can see a gap under the push rod receiving bracket but shining a light in the gap does not show under the car.
Here's the pictures >>
Does anyone know?

My car began its life in the Arabian peninsula so I know where the sand came from... but what path through the chassis?

I’ve got sand… but I know why.

As long as there is no rot good old fashioned seam sealer will take care of that.

I drove my 2002 on Pismo Beach years ago, in the early 90's. Not sure what happened to that car, but if it is still around, I GUARANTEE, they are still finding sand in it.

Love that beach bimmer with room for a bike and a board!
When I lived in Boston my coupe and Thule carried my bike and windsurfer to the Cape Cod and Maine camping trips.

I think i know how it entered your car:

The thick steel bolt that holds your rear subframe goes through the floor trough an opening that is twice or thrice the size of the bolt. The area used to be sealed off with a foam donut piece, which almost always has disintegrated over time. So, there now is a direct opening from under your car into the shell.

I think you have sand on both left and right side?

I also think that the light may not shine through as a PO possibly has blocked it with undercoating, or just backed up mud.

Not easy, but I think the best remedy is to seal it from the bottom, when supported well, car up in the air, i think yould could remove the rubber mounts and clean it with the axle in place, but unscrewing the rubber mounts is a pain as asscess to the nuts/head is difficult. Thus possibly axle out.

Only sealing it from the top will make it a moist catcher.

I think...

Was the color of your 2002 condor yellow? At least it looks like condor on the pictures; I am a great fan of that color ;-)
Chris is right, it was 100% original Golf paint '76. My first '02. The color does look much lighter in the old pics, those are digital pics of real pics too so sometimes hard to tell, sun, sand, etc. It was soo Golf, that when I bought it, the guy lived on the Golf course in Healdsburg and there was a dimple from a golf ball on the door, you could see it clearly, I found that ironic.

Gotta have the racks back then, I was a big mountain biker and surfer. Looking back, I can't believe Sean Casey drove his Turbo on the beach with the salt water/sand. That was my first introduction to a real Turbo 2002 and that thing ripped. We were all jealous of his Turbo. But he was humble about it and took us for drives.

A friend with an 82 Stepmaster van asked me for help with his difficult start issue. When I pulled the tightly placed air filter cover off the carb, there was an uneaten peanut holding the choke flap open! His wife is Miss Nature and feeds everything including squirrels and chipmunks and has her "peanut blend".

My point is 1) This is funny and sad at the same time and 2) Some things will remain a mystery.. although I think Erik is correct

When I purchased my Bavaria that was stored outside, I pulled the cover behind the front wheels off to expose the channel for the rocker panel. I pulled about a pound of acorns out of each using a shopvac. How did they ever get in there? Mice can get into anything but the acorns are not flexible. Even more interesting was that some of them had sprouted!
