This will be a rather lengthy sales ad, so I’ll apologize in advance. Just want to cover all the bases in describing this super nice Petri in full disclosure.
Beautiful and excellent condition 40cm Petri rubber/foam steering wheel. One of the nicest Petri wheel I’ve encountered. All of the individual parts with the exception (maybe) of the 6 Allen screws are original Petri/BMW. I would rate the whole wheel a conservative 8.5/10. I’ll break down the condition of all the individual components. I want to be totally transparent in my description for the steering wheel, therefore, there will be very detailing and honest evaluation of this Petri (many pluses and a few minuses).
Foam rubber grip is in great condition with the imitation grain still present and very ‘leather’ looking. The 50 year old grip is still firm with no looseness. It is very soft and supple and shows no signs of brittleness. There is some really minor top surface wear between the 7 and 9 o’clock positions, but the grain structure is still there. Don’t think it’s very noticeable if one doesn’t examine it real closely. The only blemish is a single small pitting (11 o’clock position) on the grip backside. There is a very slight discoloration immediate surrounding this pinhole. A pic will show how minimal this flaw is.
The original nickel plated alloy spokes are super nice and shiny. They may have been polished up by a previous owner. The front surface shows the minute pitting that usually defines these Petri wheels. As our beloved e9 coupes rust from new, Petri wheels also pit from new. Even NOS Petris will show some signs of pitting on both the spokes and maybe the foam/rubber grip. The spokes’ back surface is also in excellent condition with ultra small pitting. As with all closeup hi-resolution photos, any and all imperfections are greatly magnified. With bare eyes, these minimal flaws are barely noticeable.
The factory correct ‘109 738’ hub, used by both non-CSL 38cm foam/rubber wheels and also the 40cm wheels is in very good condition. The hub is nice and Bright but with some minor corrosion rust spots. Believe the alloy hub material is a mild steel due to the few rust spots and being magnetic. The e3/e9 horn contact ring is original and in great condition. The hub black plastic cover is in excellent condition and is fee of cracks or missing plastic chunks. There is just a few nicks and scratches on the still undamaged 50 year old plastic. There is a few small minor whitish discoloration of the plastic where it meets the spokes. These spots are barely noticeable and are well hidden when the wheel is mounted onto car. If inclined, the cover can be painted like new with a black plastic paint such as the Krylon fusion paint product.
The Petri/BMW horn button looks new and maybe a NOS unit. The metal 6 hole screw mounting plate is in very good condition with a few nicks on the black painted surface. This can also be repainted. The Allen screws are in good condition, original or not… who knows. These can be easily be bought new and replaced if one desires.
This beautiful Petri wheel will be greatly appreciated and enjoyed for many years to come by the eventual future owner. If desired, one can rewrap leather (usually about $350-$400) onto this wheel or it can be used as is in the present condition with no excuses needed whatsoever.
The price is $1500. Shipping via UPS or FedEx ground will probably be about $30-$40 plus insurance cost (it’ll be insured to the full wheel selling price.) for the lower 48 states and as slightly more for Alaska and Hawaii. The insurance is just a little safe guarding for any potential shipping mishaps. I Will ship internationally, but will be at a greater shipping cost. Will package wheel for shipment carefully and protectively, using plenty of padding to eliminate possible damage during shipping.
I will be happy to answer any further questions. PayPal only please.
