I have a 1972 e9, is the spin-on oil filter adapter still available as a replacement for the cartridge type housing. if so where. Any thoughts on the spin-on versus the cartridge type.
I have the late style cartridge filter housing on my car now, it's kind-of messy when you do an oil change plus the center bolt will not come out, it hits the bottom of the intake manifold.

Thanks, Doug

On my top bolt canister I slightly loosen the top bolt, slip a large zip lock bag under the can and then loosen the bolt. I can then wiggle the can/bag past the PS hoses, dip stick, battery tray and alternator (even easier with the one wire Alt, with the old Alt I also unclipped the wires to the Regulator). The zip lock is thick and won't tear easily.

Some remove the entire housing from the block but that entails four bolts and a new gasket, the less time bent over the fender the better for my back.

spin-on oil filter adapter for M30 engine

Ireland Engineering sells a spin-on oil filter adapter for the M30 engine. I think that Korman Autoworks might sell one too. I alternate between using the newer style top bolt canister and my original bottom bolt one (at least until I run out of the old bottom bolt type filters). I always unbolt the entire oil filter housing (4 bolts) and drop that into a zip-lock bag when doing oil changes and am happy with that. My car is fuel injected (3.0 csi) so it's easy to get to the filter housing.

Thanks guys, the plastic bag is a great idea I'll do that next oil change.
