These will make messy oil changes easier and filter parts (2).jpgComplete filter unit.jpgprovide for using filters with better filtration. I can provide them for a 3.5" canister that bolts from either the bottom of the filter head or the top. They use any filter suitable for a 460" Ford big block. $155 shipped I have 2 left

If it's a 3.5" diameter But judging from your picture it looks like the mounting boss for the bolt is off center? If so then it won't work. I have never seen one that is off center though.

Optical illusion, bottom bolt cans are wider
Not so. The early bottom bolt canisters are wider. But I believe around 80 or 81 they changed to 3.5 and stayed that diameter to end of production. I have sold enough oft these over the years to be sure. In all probability all of the 3.5 conversions will have the smaller can

Bert, No disagreement but the one pictured is a bottom bolt and they are wider than the top bolt. I know you have sold both in the past, I converted mine to top bolt,

Chris here is the deal the best way I know it after a learning curve when I first started doing these. The early motors up to some where around 81 used a can that was 4" diameter and bottom bolted. At about that time they then went to a 3.5" diameter can that was bottom bolted and then at some point in time, I don't know when, switched to the top bolted cans. I am also only referring to the bottom mounted cans. A good example is my 81 very original Euro 635 with an M90 that has a 3.5" can that is bottom bolted

Good to know, I’ve never seen a bottom bolt 3 1/2” can. It may be an M90 thing only as all M30 e24, all e12 and all e23 use the same bottom bolt 4” can as does all e3 and e9.

Chris here is where the confusion is. If you go into realoem and for kicks bring up an 83 635 and go to the engine lubrication sub section, you will then see there are two different filter heads showing. One top bolted one bottom bolted. I honestly have to think the bottom bolted was more common based on the many units I have sold over the years. I hope this gives more insight to a new trivia subject

the issue here is whether or not this will make changing the filter easier?
my current set up requires removing the oil filter with the oil filter housing mount attached to the engine.
Will replacing it with a spin on filter alleviate that?

Users choice but does offer a large variety of filters. A fair amount of people here have bought them over the years and might respond one way or the other
