What is the thought on thickness of sping pads (both upper and lower, front and rear), to use in conjunction with lowering springs for the best ride and height ?

Not sure there are different fronts, but I can comment on the rears. Here is my car (in white in the back) with the stock spring pad. If you look at Doug's car in front of mine, the rear end of his car sits lower than mine. I like that look better, and have switched over to the European spring perch. Unfortunately, my car is still on jack stands, so I cannot comment on the ride.

Not sure it will be all that noticeable, rear pads are only 9mm different.

Nine millimeters may not seem like much, but the measurement may prove considerable if you are comparing 40+ year old compressed rubber with a newer substitute. It also would not be that difficult to shim a spring pad, with metal, rubber or urethane. New gas shocks also tend to increase ride height.

Although not directly related, the discussion in this thread may be of interest. http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/threads/want-to-add-ac-to-a-non-ac-71-csi-is-it-possible.8472/
