Starter Issue - Dying Breath?

Well, my SR442X arrived from AutohausAZ and guess what? It’s an SR71X large case starter, unacceptable! Image on website shows small case starter, I will not install one of these ever again. Stay tuned.

You've been having lots of "fun" with your rebuild/replacement parts lately. I applaud your (unsurprising) efforts to get it right and stick with the plan.

I think this is one way these old cars become such Frankensteins - can't find/don't receive the correct part/fastener/seal so people try and make do with whatever works. That and non-specialist shops that don't know any better. At least that's the theory I've come up with owing to some of the weirdness on mine.

I finally got around to it and slayed the dragon. It took several hours and some "customized" 17mm wrenches (Harbor Freight - so cheap enough for sacrifice). The old beast of a starter is out of my E9. The visible flywheel teeth look good and undamaged, so I suspect it was the solenoid that has gone bad. When I tried to unbolt the power connection, the actual housing of the solenoid gave way... Installing the replacement will start this weekend.

The core is looking rough - I don't see this being a viable reconditioning candidate.

Question: what is the benefit of using threaded rods and nuts over the 17mm bolts?
