Hey Guys,
I am starting my slow build on my 54K mile schwartz coupe. It is a 72 vin #2250050 which puts it as the 50th automatic made from what I understand. I am the second owner and thanks to Dave in N.C. helping me put it together. All in all the car is very dry, the passenger side door has some rot at the bottom, the squegy leaked on this side as it sat under a carport for years. The mice ravaged the wiring. This interior is great and will be wonderful after some good treatment with leatherique. I am planning on pulling both subframes blasting repainting with all new bushes brakes etc. Of course the engine and auto are coming out as well. Here is the big question???
Who says what about motor options.. I want power, performance and sound. I want something that is not run of the mill, ideally a 3.5 and 6 speed from a F355 Ferrari is great but a little out of budget haha, I am building this car for me and it will be driven and enjoyed.
I love the sound of multiple sidedrafts but I know there are some reliability issues, fuel injection is great for reliability but does not sound as good. A 6 speed would be great and I have not seen a 6 speed coupe but then I have the speedo issues. I have no problem with some good hidden body reinforcements but hidden is the keys as the natural astetics are near perfect. Chad Stett from Stett Performance will be building the motor tranny set up. There are 3 e9s in my family and mine is the highest mile coupe so I think mine should be the "meanest". Any advice would be great. I will post some pictures soon.

The only M30 6 speed is from the Euro E34 M5 post 1993 or E34 M5 touring. You also don't really gain anything, as the ratio spread is pretty much the same as the Getrag 265 OD unit. As you mentioned, you also don't get a mechanical speedo drive from the 6 speed unit, so you'd have to do some instrument conversions.

Depending on how far you want to take it, I've seen LS1 swaps into coupes. However, the chassis is about as strong as a wet noodle stock. Coupeking has some excellent pictures for chassis welding improvements and structural reinforcements.

The easiest "hot" swap is a S38B38. That will net you 340 hp and ~300 lb-ft of torque without mods. To put that in perspective, that is more power and lots more torque than an E46 M3 in something that weighs about 500 lbs less. The resultant performance is explosive. The cost is significant, as the S38B38 was only used in Euro E34 M5s. The US S38B36 is almost as good, though.

The more common hot swap is to use a M30B35 from a MY 88-93 635, 735, or 535. Gives you ~200 rwhp and torque with a tune when running Motronic 1.3. Costs less than a grand for the engine and FI system. Easily the most documented swap. Also very easy to turbo for crazy numbers.

yup

The S38 is an option but the cost of a rebuild is nuts. The LS1 makes sense over a BMW v8 and fairly cheap but it just would not look right in my eyes to open the hood and see detroit. The more I think about it I lean towards a M30 with a nice turbo set up. Thanks for the input

This is my choice (in two years) http://www.rotrex.com/ . Regardless of whether you turbo or supercharge you will need fully programable engine management (Mega squirt or other) to run it. Also an engine refresh with the appropriate compression ratio and head gasket.

Everything has a cost = anything for a price.

I like the Turbo/supercharger idea, it ranks top on my list.
Here are some pictures of the E9

THe first 2 pictures shows the 3 piece BBS 16" wheels I plan to run.
THe next 2 are engine bay shots the "rust" seen is all superficial.

The last is an interior shot the seats are nice but the stitching is dry so most seams are seperating.

Few more

The first shot is my Alpina wheel, this wheel is from 1968 and from what I can tell is one of the first 12 wheels from alpina, it is flat and not bent towards the driver, I just had the wood redone. I would like some input from what you can see in the pictures I know I still need work on the Allen head bolts. I also have this set of Scheels I was pondering what do you guys think? They appear to be two different styles.

The last two pictures are of another project I am working on a 1957 Corvette with 43K original miles, 2 4 barrels, auto, with all other options including the rare power/hydraulic top
